St Patrick's Day - a Poem for Friday Writings

    

    Was St. Patrick Pinched?

Was our St. Patrick really real?

Yes he was real though not a saint 

Catholics hadn't made saints back then 

Celebrate him March seventeen 

He drove snakes out of Ireland? 

Yes, were a poetic symbol

Metaphors for the devil leaving 

Leaving from his many converts 

Did leprechauns really help him? 

Total fable they don't exist 

We like to think so, needed help 

We write of them as if they're real*

Then why should we wear green that day? 

Wear them so that you won't get pinched 

Green dress gives total Pinch License 

Put on your green and pinch away **

Had he remembered "pi" 

Might have stopped while he's sane

I've almost always, perhaps always, written as poem or a ditty for Pie Day, March 14 (3.14) .  Things slipped up on me this year so this Senryū will have to do.

The wheel goes round and round

Math's invention supreme

Wheelbarrow came first up

Take a ride, haul some rocks

 

Speed's love child Chariot

Perfect roundness in need

Outer point from the hub

Always same; radius

 

Save on wear, steel encased 

Ribbon around the edge

Length to be determined

Always is 2 Pi r 

 

Length's name Circumference

Formula 2 π r

(Two times Pi, symbol π,

times radius, simple)

 

Don't you just love the wheel!

With its loved improvements

We will give thanks to Pi
Math Constant, 3.14...

 - This is my annual Pi Day Poem.  Some are fun, some are okay, some, well ... You can read some more by clicking the "Pi Day" link below (or Here).
 - "The circumference of a circle is found with the formula C= π*d = 2*π*r. Thus pi equals a circle's circumference divided by its diameter. Plug your numbers into a calculator: the result should be roughly 3.14." (provided by Googling pi -- Link)
 - When I was in the military (U.S. Army, five years, all but eight weeks at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas) I rode a Vespa motor scooter purchased new from Sears Roebuck for work and play, as our second car.  It had climbed small mountains, ridden more than several trips to Old Mexico, and took me to work every day when weather permitted, which were most days.  It finally died in New Hampshire when I was working as an Aerospace Engineer for Philco Corporation, later to become Ford (Motor) Aerospace Corporation.

Today is National Pi Day (check it) to celebrate March 14 (3rd month, 14th day -- 3.14 = pi)

"Pi" is a mathematical constant equaling 3.14159265359.  For most applications 3.14 or 3.1416 is usually sufficient.  For approximation we can use 3 1/7.

A lot of people will be writing a "Pi Poem.  Different form and free form will be used, some will use a Pi-Kau, a three line special poem of  a three syllable, a one syllable, and a four syllable lines.  This year I am writing a Limerick, one year I wrote pi-kau form.

• Pi is useful for finding areas and volumes when the object is a circle or a cylinder. 
• In a formula we can abbreviate pi to be represented for pi by using the Greek letter "π".
• What is Pi?  It is the circumference of any circle, divided by its diameter.  Also using this equation, we can back out and find dimensions by manipulating the formula.
• For example, knowing the diameter ("D") of a circle we can find the circumference ("C") by using the formula, C = π x D. 
• Pi Day also happens to be the birthday of Albert Einstein. (born 1879) You could eat a pie or play an Einstein-themed trivia game, or have an Einstein impersonator contest. 
• Mrs. Jim is making me a pi Day pie, I hope rhubarb.

I used a Pi a lot in my studies as I have eight college mathematics courses giving me a Minor of Math to supplement my Economics Major for my Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Houston.

Today I Have Some Apple Pie;

leftover, part of nine inch pie
(a Pi Day Poem)

 

Three by four and a half inches

That's what my leftover pie is

Apple pie, alamode, my choice

When no ice cream I'll take some cheese

  

Now let's see how much pie I have

Four and a half is radius

Circumference is 2 times pi

Times the radius.  That's 30

 

Three inches at the top, which means

My piece is one tenth of the pie

Leftover apple pie I love

Love my host as well, nice neighbor

 

Circumference   =   2 • π • radius

Today, March 14 (3-14 or 3.14) is Pi Day (link). Pi Day is celebrated mostly by mathematicians but you can join in on the fun, somehow. Me? I am writing thess Pi Poems for my blog. Perhaps next year I will write another Pi Haiku (3, 1, 4 syllables per line)

I am not a mathematician but I do have a math minor to go along with my bachelor of science in economics. For me that involved taking seven college math classes for a total of 21 semester hours.

Differential Equations, DE, was my most involved class that I completed. Advanced Calculus was my 'weedout' class, i.e. I dropped it before completion. Read here to find out why this course "weeded me out."

2.  Pictured is a 'cow pie' which in lay person's language is a neat flat round pile of cow manure.  They dry and can be used as fuel for lots of things from fuel for the stove to a substitute Frisbee when playing in the fields.

The link says that there are only two kind.  The Wiki Writers have not been to Texas.  Ours are white, larger than theirs, and look a little like longed legged cranes.  They spend their days in the fields following a herd of cattle.
