The Riders - a Poem for the Sunday Muse

 The Homeless
    Horse and Rider

A homeless pair
nameless two
walking the streets
he was a stray
she has run away
they lived under a bridge
ate whatever
folk in passing cars
would bring
or drop
into their buckets
more money than food
money that was
hard to spend

they'd ride
to the edge of town
plains to the north
seashore to the south
there they'd
gallop to
their content
bareback 'cause
she'd hocked his saddle

then one day
they didn't come
homeless horse had died
no animal cemetery
in their town
where could she turn
there'd be no wagon for him
dog food and glue
from processed horse
not in her vocabulary

what to do
with her dead homeless horse
horse with no name
horse without a saddle
what to do

she cried and cried
and cried the next night
her homeless horse was gone
gone but still here
dead
here dead leaving her alone

the second morning
she didn't wake
she'd died crying
crying to sleep
sleep that didn't wake

autopsies told

O.D. for her
worn out for him
no more were the
homeless riding
pair

Plants -- a Poem for dVerse Poetics

Texas Bluebonnets growing wild in the fields

the weed

weeds are popular
wildflowers pretty
we love and adore
city folk trample
trample or they pick
farmer's bane always
being tamed and trimmed
hardy plants still live
won't become extinct

I picked this clump of clovers beside the sidewalk
leading to downtown Killarney, Ireland.

My Puppy Dog - a Poem for Friday Writings

Adi has retired from Pet Partners (URL

       I loved my dog

I loved my dog, we had a bond
I loved my dog, she was my pal
I loved my dog, she was a gift

A gift to me from my daughter
A gift to me making happy
A gift in time of puppy need

Puppy needed some daytime care
Puppy needed her nerves be soothed
Puppy needed to live with me

I loved my dog, she was a gift
A gift in time of puppy need
Puppy needed to live with me

Her name was Adi, I miss her
Adi died 2012

Certain Sweets - a Poem for dVerse Quadrille

    Tough Times

COVID, COVID, stay away
don't come back another day
We don't like you there's no way
you take our fun make us pay

Mucus, coughing, phlegm persists
Smell, taste, strength, more, diminished
Pushups gone, coffee whiffs weak
chocolate candies' tastes still mine

My Sweetooth's hardy

 - After two shots and two boosters, including the newest, in March, 2022, we took a cross Atlantic cruise from Ft. Lauderdale to Southampton, Britain, U.K.  Then we would be shuttled to London.  On the fifth day of our 16-day cruise, Mrs. Jim came down with the COVID-19, four days later I had it also.  We were then quarantined for the rest of the cruise and afterwards taxied to a motel for another five days quarantine.  U.S. requirements for reentry from a foreign country required a full ten-day quarantine at that time.  Our feet never touched soil until we exited the motel on the following Saturday.
