One single impression: Gift -- and a Poem for Friday Writings

Why;The Gift

Daddy whadja bring me
don' see no big sack
postcards wine yellow cheese
whaja bring me back

Ya know I've been so good
a toy maybe two
cuddly bear an' a doll
really one will do

Puzzle game or some beads
boy's toys play in dirt
Daddy whadja bring me
Oh—pretty t-shirt

Thank you lots
but
Why, a shirt like that

One Single Impression: Embroidery

.

Embroidery

The writing's on the wall,
it's inevitable.
It's written on my bed,
it's insurmountable.

Did the ladies craft it
or was it China made?
Criss cross, best art of all,
now hail to the Queen!

The picture: I took my picture of this original art at the M&M Store in London (U.K.).  You guessed then, it is a mosaic made of brightly colored M&Ms.  Even so, I didn't like it.  I didn't even sniff around to see if it was for sale or a store decoration fixture.
The prompt word, 'Embroidery,' was provided by Gillena Cox of Lunch Break

One Single Impression: Elusive (an acrostic poem)

  E L U S I V E

Everyday finds him in hiding
Loveless lonely fellow is he
Unpsent his passions are crying
Save these feelings they yearn for she
Into love's dim humble lighting
Vanity is no more to be
End is well he's now inviting

One Single Impression: Quagmire

.
Quagmire

She was in a quagmire, that was sure
with one foot in, the other out
she'd paid the price out of her purse
a price too high this is about

Hubby could know, checkbook keeper
paid instead from the grocery cash
she bought some beans now in deeper
Mother was right, should have a stash

Beans and rice, rice and beans that night
then cake she'd baked and some bubbly
brought it out with candles alight
by its side new watch for Hubby.

One Single Impression: Carnival

.

Carnival

The carnival has come to town
the fat lady we love to see
oh gee, I hope there is a clown
a scary ride you're close to me

We'll take our chance and shoot the gun
for you I'll win a furry bear
cotton candy, we're out for fun
just tonight may the devil care

One Single Impression: Calmed

.
Ceansū Tráchta;
(Irish) Traffic Calming

An ordinary Sunday afternoon
little family out for their weekly ride
Grandpa riding shotgun with his spittoon
Dad had the reigns proudly he steered the drive

In the back kids and Mom with windows down
dodging juice from their Grandad's outside spit
wise Mom packed a kerchief to wipe her brow
and gives aid to Dad from back where she sits

Passed by red car its driver half Dad's age
He raised Dad's ire a lesson boy must learn
don't mess with folks take care you'll cause a crash
Dad had the whip young fellow you must burn

He'd cut him off now Dad started around
he'll teach young lad that his driving is bad
wise Mom sitting in back now held her ground
stop it all there's no lesson to be had

Dad knew his was folly and Mom was right
youngster avoid there's safety holding back
Mom's are wise they calm our souls quell the fight
the lesson here family comes first says Dad

One Single Impression: Comb

.
Our girl

Mothers teach
little girls learn how to comb
smoothing the locks
and loosing the snarls

Then then comes day
our girl has learned it well
beauty now reigns
where ever she is seen

Still comes the day
messy dirty looking
the comb is done
for style this girl goes grunge

One Single Impression: Meld

.
Play the cards you draw;
standing room only

I drew my cards counted my meld
I was happy with what was dealt

An ace of beauty blessed my wife
a king of nature gave me life
the queen of soul painted my heart
a Jack of humor spiced my part

The Joker came to make me smile
comedy of life filled the aisles

One Single Impression: Apprentice

.

The Apprentice: her graduation

She signed on for a three year stint,
only to be asked for two more.
Five is the minimum for all the
training you'll be getting was their reply.
Those rascals, the harbingers of evil.
Why the Hell did she ever ask for this job any way.

So she toiled for 364 days,
and one by one she had met her quota.
She met her production quota
after the second week had gone by.
An accomplice, rather a co-worker,
had given her a tip on how to make it all work.
From that day on she never missed a deadline.

It wasn't easy.
She would spend her eight hours a day
on the job and much of her off time as well
working like a dog.

Things seemed to be going well for her.
Her work was well received
by her supervisor and trainer.
Next week she would advance to full pay
and more than that perhaps
or a bonus of some sort.

At the end of that fateful day,
it was the last day of November,
she timidly approached her master.
"Well, how'd I do?" she asked,
"I'm ready now for
most any assignment you can give me."

The supervisor, with a twisted sad smile replied,
"My dear you are the best we have ever had
in our apprenticeship program.
The bad news is that we have no place,
no place for new journeymen workers at this time.
Please collect your pay on the way out.
And don't call us, we'll call you."

"Don't forget to turn in your apron."

One Single Impression: Lonely

Alone

Lonely days make me sad.
More so on the rainy days.

I remember once we journeyed to Missouri.
It rained most of the day and seemed like perpetual night.
Our old Chevy was leaking rain.
Leaking right over where we children sat.
Back seat of course. We were sitting in the back.

When we got to Joplin my mother broke the news.
We were expecting something sad from her.
She seemed to cry all the time; ever since two days ago.
Two days ago when she got the call.

She wouldn't talk about it but we kids all knew.
We knew there was nothing good
coming along those telephone lines.
She mumbled something almost obscene,
something about the operator listening in.

Mother broke the news.
She had her kerchief,
wet and wadded,
next to her nose.

But we all knew it was her eyes that made the wet.
Wet of her tears. Do tears really stain?
We had always heard about the tear stained.
Tear stained cheeks and the like.
For sure stained her kerchief was.

The news that mother broke was solemnly heard;
distraught, the young ones listened, silently sobbing.

Grandma had died.

Our grandma. Grandmother to a tribe it seemed.
We had always had Grandma. Now she was gone.

We cried.

We were alone. I was alone.
Alone in the car with the others.
Alone in the rain.
Alone in the wet of the leaking Chevy.
And the rain wouldn't stop.

Why did it have to be?
I was alone.
All alone.
Very sad.
Alone.

One Single Impression: Joie de vivre [Joy of living]

happy little joey skipped and sang
freely waltzing down the street
sing the tune your father wrote
sing of the apples in the trees
sing of the pickers in the grove

joey's glad it isn't him who climbs
climbs the ladders to the trees
climbs the ladder of success and
escape. escape from the orchards where
both his father and the pickers are enslaved

joey danced on down his way
success is his to keep
though his father wants success and escape
success he has escape he wants
joey has both success and escape
joey is free from apples and the trees

Joie de vivre [Joy of living]
thanks to his father's succes

The sign by the roadside orchard says, "piquer c'est voler," meaning 'bite is stealing.' The red 'dot' in the picture has an apple inside an international circle with a diagonal 'no' line. This all is to say, 'do not eat apples from the trees, it is stealing.'

Picture was taken on Île d'Orléans, QC, Canada (link with map), just north of Quebec City, on the St. Lawrence River.

One Single Impression: Choices

Youthful Choices

my Johnny Boy please use your head
don't go too far away from home
head for the gold at rainbow's end
not a good choice alone unknown

I'm Johnny Boy I've made my pick
not left or right which one to choose
I'll take the cloud where angel sits
all seem the same nothing to loose

first love is sweet ne'er to forget
it mattered not soon went their way
our Johnny Boy had no regret
for sixty years savored one day

. . .

found this of love that Johnny had
though you travel from home so far
making your choices good or bad
savor the rose your way is hard

One Single Impression: Empty

Friend

Merlot is my comfort
I shall not want
Though I am old and blue
There when I need

My glass is near empty
I shall not want
For sure there is some more
Where that came from

My thoughts once bad dissolve
Night's fright is calmed
A friend may come to call
None ever writes

And if our bottle's dry
We shall not want
For sure there are some more
Where this came from

One Single Impression: Beginning

. . . .. Love Began

Love began in May one bright sunny day
He said and she said and then all quiet
Quiet months worrisome months mother's wait
Come due time God's small miracle to obey

Love stayed on his tiny mouth opens wide
He said and they said hush dear little one
Your belly's full what mother can provide
To nourish you fine animals have died

Love cycle ended parents did their best
He said and she said go do what we've done
Big enough and learned there's no need to guess
Again God's time dear one you leave the nest

Now you have heard love grows in cyclic leaps
Two are joined as one love and parenthood
Small beginnings all preplanned say the least
Instinct God's gift to man and fowl and beast

Notes:
1. Pictured is a pan of baked beans. I thought it was neat to intersperse those large white lima beans, often called butter beans, with the rest. They were mostly taken as I was near the end of the food line.
2. (generally the second definition) Connoisseur: A person of informed and discriminating taste: a connoisseur of fine wines.

One Single Impression: Cocoon

Cocoon in Use

We weave our webs with gleeful pride,
cute little nests for our old age.
When mine was done I climbed inside
and closed the door here in my cage.

Its dark in here and I can sleep.
Never again to see sun's burn?
Little do I know but down deep
I'm feeling I can not return.

I will sleep now hanging up high;
wish I believed reincarnate.
It matters not for I will die.
Be like my mom* who gave her egg?

* Mom was the butterfly who laid the egg from which he hatched as a worm. She always dies before her worm baby hatches.
Here is a cute animated illustration about the life cycle of a butterfly; and
here is a diagram showing that life cycle in a block diagram.

One Single Impression: Angel

Angels on My List

My angel waits above my head in bay
I know she does, she's my protective marm
I pray to God I need her watching way
like moms of old she saves me from all harm

My angel lives with me she is my spouse
Pretty for me and queen of mine so sweet
I love her all, hands to feet, heart and soul
the greatest gal that I could ever meet

My angel lives with me my little child
This kid is smart and quick she's always near
she follows me around puppy dog style
I love my angel small this little dear

So now you know exactly what it takes
my angel list is short but hard to make
