a Poem about Fairy Tales

"Snow White and Rose Red" *
         art by Kerry Darlington

The Bear Comes

Snuggled down not in their beds
Snow White, Rose Red and 'The Bear'
Soon they'd be sleeping, the three

Dreams would come, mostly pleasant
Hungry bear knocking at their door
Cold and snowy, shivering

So they fed him, warmed him up
Played by the fire and he stayed
Became a nightly affair

Widow mother, glad he came
Now a play friend for the girls
Unlocked door he'd leave by dawn

Years and years went by the same
Came "The Bear" every evening
Carry the girls up to bed

What more did they dream about
Will they cry when bear no more  **

 - - *The Bear:  "... After this, every evening at the same time the bear came, lay by the fire, and allowed the children to play with him; so they became quite fond of their curious playmate, and the door was not ever bolted in the evening until he had appeared..." An Art Inspired Poem

An Apple Fell

An apple fell last night
A big round juicey one
It rolled beyond the light
Where it could not be found
Rolled and rolled out of sight

Still in her robe early
Before the gardner came
Tip-toed past distant tree
Two feet more there it lie
Snatched that imp up to see

Not one bite she did take
Back in her shirt to stay *

A Country Girl Poem

This Naughty Girl

This naughty girl is not for naught
Her toys are words learned on the farm
Amidst the cows pigs and horses
She came to town did she ever

Smallish town farmers brought their eggs
Sold the eggs and showed their daughters
Saturday night their groceries bought
Kicked the tires while girls met their friends

Sitting on sidewalk benches she
Dropped her hankie gave boys her wink
Didn't dare go walking with one
When her dad's in town kicking tires

When she had a car of her own
She'd drive it to the town next down
Loaded with girls they'd cruise main street
Boys would call out she'd flash her lights

And when she comes to town they"ll know
Lucy farm girl was on the prowl
A simple girl who likes the boys
I'll Cruise Main Street not naughty girl

 - Note: On weekend nights in my days the young would cruise Main Street, Lincoln Nebraska, boys and girls in separate cars, or mixed.  They'd flirt and sometimes mix.  Or do a little street racing, my car was hopped up and fast.  The drive-ins were popular too.  Oh yes, there was a girl, Lucy, almost every weekend night in a late model Ford, full of girls.
