a first Car -- fictional poem of a car that I like

My New Car

Twas my very first
To me it was slick
and very pretty
No glue on this beast

Zero to sixty
in four seconds flat
Turtles are slower
I'm idling one ten

It was a hot rod
Gave my teeth for it

Saana's formal definition states, "Defining Litotes: Litotes, as a figure of speech, is a rhetorical device used to make an understatement by negating the opposite of the intended message. A double negative is frequently used in this, leading to a positive declaration."

My Homes, some of them - a Poem for Friday Writings

Old house the home where I was born
     Two bedrooms, kitchen, living room
Porch where I slept, 'neath fallen tree
       Privileges, run of house--my home
          Mom, Dad, sister, me--family

  Homes and feelings

Home to me is where
I'm living now
And just about where
I've lived before
Count my dropout times
listing them
won't  fit on one page

At age seventeen
I lost its love
Second home would be
Mom's Aunt xxx's home
Lincoln, Nebraska,

College kid then
Alone, isolated
three rooms
three tenants
no homey privileges

Three semesters passed
dropped out and moved
Three years rented rooms

Those three years
They passed fairly fast
I moved around a lot

One was a
basement appartement
Landlady lived alone
Free of rent, I had to
keep coal for the furnace
keep the sidewalk clear
clear of leaves and snow

That was a nice home
Furnished, it felt nice and cozy
Bachelor left alone
no privileges still

But then one day
the landlady wanted me
to clear the sidewalk leaves
I said I would come Monday
Had a busy weekend
(dating, working on the car,
our race car 1934 Ford coupe
Sunday was race the car day)

She said now, I said
"I quit.  This is a job to me
and I can quit when I want
I moved Monday night
My home once again lost
and then found anew

This was like old home
I worked with the man
and knew the son
I had TV again in rented place
Ate with them some times
Felt like a second son

Ended less than a year
I became married
and
was drafted into the Army
two weeks apart

Start another write
another day
New type of life
Bachelor days are over,
for a long while

        Danger Wheel

Big Wheel turns and I'm not on it

Round and round it goes up and 'round

My love is there thinks safe and sound

She sits, with her “brother”, she says

Revolutions she does not count

Not while he's there, him I like not

A modern Ferris wheel was at our county fair Texas rodeo, the County Fair at Brenham, Texas, on September 17, 2010 .  It was the first one we had seen in a long time, this time we went on request.  We had a guest from France, friend of our son, who had wanted to see a bull riding contest.  She was not disappointed.

We have ridden on this old 1923 Ferris wheel, it belonged to a fellow in our car club.  And yes, one time it stopped working while we were on top.  It took quite a while to get us off, I'm not real sure how we passed our time up there.

Play time remembered -- -- a Poem for dVerse Poetics

I let Adi (aka Duke for this poem) pick our route.
She likes the au naturel places

  A Place and a Space

A place I still remember
it's often in my mind
A place where me and my
dog could come and play
A place where I could hide
hide from folks and worry
The place remains, there still
the place where rabbits play
But I no longer can go
nor the dog, she's long dead

The space is there as well
we just don't go there either
The space is a long long hill
a place to sled when there's snow
The space is in pasture land
a place to ride my horse
The space is smooth with hay grass
a space to ride full gallop
A place for small boys to come
down the hill a long walk

A place of solace for one
he and the dog can play
Smoke a cigarette without
adults telling no no
A place to invite sister
let the sister smoke one
One cigarette made her sick
she swore off smokes for life
A swell place to get naked
where no one else can see

A place with water to wade
barefoot pants rolled or off
A place to slice down the banks
dust clouds followed like smoke
A place, wade through the tunnel
'neath the road to neighbor's lake
School program now, Santa said
"I saw you down by my lake
At a place seen, should not play
caught, Santa belief left

A place now here to tell, end
end with the old Buick
A place where half in buried
dirt, that car I could drive
Buick, rusted sides, no top
wooden steering wheel gone
A place, Duke my dog and I
drove all over the world
The place is there still, alone
only rabbits go there now

 - Ingrid has asked, "I urge you to write the poetry of the places and/or spaces which inspire you the most. It does not have to be natural scenery: choose a cityscape or even a cinema or shopping mall if you prefer. I simply want to know how place and space move you, and which places and spaces mean the most to you."

Making New - an Acrostic Poem for Friday Writings

HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!

R
eclaim, Rekindle, and Rebirth

Relax yourself--claim again
empty heads will not count
clip from your paper
lots of paper dolls you can make
almost a dozen from only one page
in paper doll contests you might win
make them slim, make them pretty,

Remember childhood days
empty bellies do not count
kindergarten days rekindled
invest in rounded point scissor cutters
no one cares if you act senile today
don't you know its New Year's Day
let them laugh the laughs on them
early childhood memories coming forth

another plight you'll buy
nothing counts from them
dare acting senile today

Reserve the time wisely
emptied hearts try to count
better filled with childhood dreams paper dolls
ignore the hoots they don't know
right from left hasn't registered
tonight new birth you will have
hoot and holler and scream like the kid you be

Close to ?? - a poem for Friday Writings

1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Nomad Wagon (googled)

    On Getting Cozy

Makes me think of closeness
thinking of coziness
Two bods nesting together
like a pair of kitty cats
Maybe awake
perhaps asleep

Awake and playful
lover's exercise
Never standing
that be silly
Relaxed and cuddled
sofa, lights turned low

More pleasurable
for the younger set
Mind goes to beach wagons
fifty-seven Chevy
Front seat or back
bucket or bench

Memorable evenings late
more've done than will admit
On or near Lover's Lane,
in the woods, edge of town
Wherever, just alone
honor system, it works

Coziness
memorable

Younger Daughter's Cat
makes himself cozy with her (Her Photo)

Crazy? - a Poem for Friday Writing

“I think perhaps all of us go a little crazy at times.”
                                            ~ Psycho, by Robert Bloch

      Yesterday

Yesterday I wasn't feeling so well
It wasn't being sick to my stomach
Haven't been that way since I partied well
That was back in 1975
The party was for me, new graduate.

I blamed my ills on a
firefly elf
She lights up at nights
never know when she'll come
She'll bring me good or
sometimes bad
And other times she'll
appear when she just
wants to talk

I can hear her coming, the
roar of her yellow Corvette
It was bedtime for me and
my trying to sleep
That didn't happen so I turned TV on
First "Murder She Wrote" killing
was had when I heard her drive up

Last night I thought it was
to talk
She sat on my knee
and read a book
I think she wants a
promotion
To the rank of genie

Now genies are rude
but that's not her style
She practices on me from her book
I noted the cover
Title was
"Pain and Illness Infliction 101"

The Night -- NaPoWriMo 2022.Day 24

When We Were Young

Like busy monkeys on their swings, we drove and drove almost all night long.  Honked at the boys, drag raced with them at the lights.  We outran them all, all except the older man driving a pukey green Corvette.   We were hopped up good, car and driver both.  And when one got tired the other would drive.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights we roved the streets.  The guys could never catch us unless we caught them first.  Most of them had something to drink and offered us.  We don't drink spirits, only diet cola drinks.

A few of the guys were okay for us young ladies, we generally ended up together at one of our homes when the parents were away.  Except for me, I lived in rented rooms and moved around town from one end to another.

I had an apartment for a couple of weeks but then I left, landlady problems.  She didn't like our late night weekend parties.  And really didn't like when we all went to sleep and left the record player playing.  So it didn't take me long to tire of her griping and I moved out.

That was the settling.  Until --

Little Joe got married and both he and his new wife went away, into the Army.  He left so suddenly that we didn't even know, couldn't throw a party for him.

We were all devastated!  Our world had been turned upside down. All us fishes left the bowl, parties over without Little Joe.  We'd cruise the streets still.  Could we bear partying again?

One person didn't leave, she could not.  She was paralyzed with grief, drifted in the bowl alone.  She had thought it was her whom Little Joe had loved.

No wonder he had married in secret and left town so fast.  Ditched to float through life alone.

Older guy with the pukey green Corvette?  He finally learned he wasn't up to being young.

where we were asked to use at least one simile, I started mine with one.   Most similes use "as" or "like" to make a similar resulting comparison.
 - This story is mostly true except that I wrote it as first person tense by one of the participating young ladies.  I had hot rodded my 1952 Ford Tudor really bad, it out ran even the new Chevy V8's with power pac.
 - We had Little Joe's goodbye party anyway, after he had left.  And there were others cruising but not the green Corvette.

Weekly Scribblings - My Army Time Car

    My old Mercury

A Jimmy Dean 1950 Mercury two door.  It was a lovely car when I got it free and clear.  No more car payments for me.

When I was drafted into the U.S. Army with car payments on a bought-new 1956 Ford Sunliner convertible my car payments were more than my government paycheck.  Those payments were fine when I worked in the watch factory but no more.

Before I left to go into boot camp a 'kindly' used car dealer made the swap with me.  He would sell my car and keep the proceeds while I would drive away in the six-year-old Mercury.  Fine deal for me.

The car was fast like most every car I've ever owned.   Pretty too, fit for this young fellow, who was sort of like the actor, James Dean who had a similar 1949 Mercury.  To me he was a real "Rebel without a Cause" like the movie in which he starred.

The car served me well but five years later my car things had slowed almost to a stop.  Mostly because it wasn't fast anymore, it moved forward only, and then not very fast.

Two gears refused to go like I liked, Reverse and First Gear had given up. With a wife who didn't work and now four kids (the firstborn were twins) I couldn't afford to buy a new one on Army pay.

My kindly father came to the rescue and traded with me for his tired but running well ten-year-old Ford.  My brother-in-law drove it down to Texas, a thousand miles, and drove the forward moving only now-so-sad car up to my dad.

 - The picture is me with the 1950 Mercury taken at the foot of Mt. Franklin which another and I would soon be climbing.  After enjoying the summit and its town of El Paso views we would ride back down in the cable car.

Sunday Muse -- Two loves at first sight

 A Long Ride;
and short night

I was tooling along

With my Mustang top down

Came up on Chrysler old

Puddling along so slow

Looking down to my left

"No Passing" from the sign

That evening at the ball

Minding my own business

Came upon chick so nice

Smiled at me, I'd been had

Wasn't looking for her

Nor for anyone else

The car pulled in for gas

Mustang needed some too

Chrysler wasn't so bad

Looked better at twelve feet

Hadn't looked for a car

Nor for anything else

Met again at the drinks

Iced lemon tea was had

Talked the rest of the night

We danced a little too

"See you tomorrow's" said,

little Mustang'd away

The Chrysler was there when

I got to my motel

Six hundred bucks she's yours

Deal was made, called my friend

She was ready to ride

The faithful Mustang cried
