My Homes, some of them - a Poem for Friday Writings
Old house the home where I was born
Two bedrooms, kitchen, living room
Porch where I slept, 'neath fallen tree
Privileges, run of house--my home
Mom, Dad, sister, me--family
Homes and feelings
I'm living now
And just about where
I've lived before
Count my dropout times
listing them
won't fit on one page
At age seventeen
I lost its love
Second home would be
Mom's Aunt xxx's home
Lincoln, Nebraska,
College kid then
Alone, isolated
three rooms
three tenants
no homey privileges
Three semesters passed
dropped out and moved
Three years rented rooms
Those three years
They passed fairly fast
I moved around a lot
One was a
basement appartement
Landlady lived alone
Free of rent, I had to
keep coal for the furnace
keep the sidewalk clear
clear of leaves and snow
That was a nice home
Furnished, it felt nice and cozy
Bachelor left alone
no privileges still
But then one day
the landlady wanted me
to clear the sidewalk leaves
I said I would come Monday
Had a busy weekend
(dating, working on the car,
our race car 1934 Ford coupe
Sunday was race the car day)
She said now, I said
"I quit. This is a job to me
and I can quit when I want
I moved Monday night
My home once again lost
and then found anew
This was like old home
I worked with the man
and knew the son
I had TV again in rented place
Ate with them some times
Felt like a second son
Ended less than a year
I became married
and
was drafted into the Army
two weeks apart
Start another write
another day
New type of life
Bachelor days are over,
for a long while

An interesting read to learn about all your homes Did you say you slept on the porch? You mean outside?
Almost outside. Grandpa and Dad screened and glassed it in. But no heat or AC, my blankets had frost around my head some cold winter nights.
..
This made me think of all the places I lived in too... I like how you make the distinction based on priviliges enjoyed at a place of residence.
Interesting
It is interesting to see the trajectory of your life like that of many, progressing and book-marked by the places and conditions in which we settle.
A varied and interesting life indeed! I'm glad you found something to make each of these places a home while you were there. It seems that for you home is always where you're living now; a fortunate attitude to have. I like the photo and description of the one you grew up in.
It sounds like quite a struggle reading it, you were so young to make your own way, even with an aunt. You landed on your feet!
You seem to have moved around a lot. Same here too. But you have race car days. (The Ford Coupe is a mean-looking beauty) :)
So wonderful to recount the good old bachelor days. All too familiar of being temporarily housed and enjoying every minute of it. Thanks for Sharing, Dr Jim!
Hank
I really enjoyed reading this, Jim!
Sounds like you make do and get on with life!
