Dare I Ramble? A Tuesday Texas Rambling Poem

Some Texas Ramblings;
  in or out; ins and outs 

I like Texas for its gorgeous landscape, the 
hot summers and mild winters, and plenty of BBQ, 
Blue Bell Creamery ice cream and fried goodies to 
you're fed and happy.  And for very friendly people

That's how you'll know your in Texas. You'll be 
Greeted with smiles and drawls and you all's 
Lots of tall tales, most are true. I'll tell you 
Some now after I get myself dried off good 

I'm out now, sitting by the side of the pool
The water was warm, thermometer said 90
The breeze is cool, thermometer said 91 
I'm not certain which I like better, in or out 

Thinking of the time when a down the street
Lady did bad. When our next door neighbors 
Were gone, that lady brought her dogs to swim 
I don't like swimming after dogs, I told on her 

Though she told me she had permission that 
Didn't seem right. Those two ladies had a row (rhyme it with cow)
But afterwards I could swim and stay clean 
No more mange or fleas or bugs I would get 

My thinking went wild after conjuring up that  
Next came the doctor who would ride his horse 
Rode it right into the hospital, he owned the place 
The health folk made him stop so he closed shop 

Or when the neighbor kids would bring animals in 
Into the house when their parents were gone 
Roger the goat would poop on the floor, not nice 
And the rooster would wake the cat while bunnies 

I never forgave those kids cause my dog couldn't (sleep)
I told on them too. Their dad sold the goat and 
Their mom cooked the rooster after she pulled 
his head off.  The kids all cried while the bunnies 

Got to stop and take a quick dip before supper 
Next time I'll tell about the rabbits and the goose

Mount Franklin's Peak;

fun mountain climb memories

I'm having memories again this day

Memories of El Paso and it's hill

Mount Franklin beckoned me oft before

I would climb the mountain, rocks and all

Then the cable car I'd ride back down

 

I'll climb no more though return I might

Will be in the little orange cage

Up and down, this time I'll ride both ways,

Titanium knee, creaking joints, they beg

Please do leave the climb for younger folk
.

- Hannah tells us of her planned repeat visit to Maine and some of her plans to climb Maine's Mount Katahdin.  It is Maine's tallest Mountain (5,269 feet), although my Texas highest peak find, Mount Franklin (Wikipedia link), is much taller (7,192 feet, although my Ranger peak is only 5,632 feet--have to climb the rest). (Everything is bigger in Texas!!)

 

- She asked us, "...  if you have a mountain that's grown a granite stone-shape in your heart, by all means, share! "  So I tried that a bit with my little ditty 'poem'.  I climbed that mountain quite often back when I was in the Army, stationed at Ft. Bliss, El Paso, Texas, for five years.

Adi Can ................... do National Start a Walk Day ... Looking At the Sky

Adi has already been walking for a long, long time. Twelve and a half years if you'd like to know.

We walk at least once a week, Adi would like to walk every day.

My cardiologist and my GP would like me to walk every day. My podiatrist said not to walk. That's two to one with Adi for walking, what do foot doctors know about these things anyway?

Oh yes, the sky, the sky. It was this blue, all over, not a cloud in sight on this pretty Texas morning.

Getting there is half the fun ... Looking At the Sky

Our local Early Ford V-8 Club had an outing. We went to the Lienda Plantation after meeting at 10:00 in the morning to drive together from Magnolia, Texas.

These pictures show a little of the Texas scenery we encountered along the way. We were south of the hills we have around our home in Montgomery, everything was flat. There weren't even any freeways with those little overpass bumps.

A few of the cars were newer than our charter recognized. I was in my 1998 Ford Mustang GT Convertible (scroll down in picture), with the top down, there were a 1957 Ford T-Bird and a 1980's Mercedes belonging to members who did not drive their early fords.

Early Fords are from 1932 to 1953, the years that Ford had a flat head V-8 engine as an option.

SkyWatch Friday (my thirteenth) -- Fall sky above Texas orchard

We call these things Horse Apples but their proper name is Osage Oranges. They grow on a lot of native trees around here and are generally called a nuisance.

The fruit can be used as insect repellent but it is hard to get into a spray bottle.

Down the road a bit is this ornamental pear tree in bloom. Many of the pear trees are in bloom here right now. This is one of ours in the front yard.

I blame it on shock caused by Hurricane Ike, their system is messed up and they think they have to make blooms so late in the year.

At first glance, this sky pic looks like a clear blue sky without a cloud in the sky!

Wrong! The sky is all one big cloud, not an opening in sight.

This is a common sight in the early mornings around Houston. It isn't smog, it is just a low layer of clouds that soon will be burned off by the sun's heating rays.

The NOAA weather map picture of cloud formtions below shows a very large cloud over our part of Texas, circled. The Jim Bunch's home is to the top right (northeast) part of that big cloud. You might want to make it large sized to see the map better.

I told you the sun was doing its work. We will wait a half hour or so and have another look.

Now only these clouds are to be seen. They are hovering over the Houston area to our south and may bring them a few showers. We will be low humidity and dry today [I'm writing this on Thursday, the 14th] with temperatures in the mid-nineties.

BTW, some mornings start out this way, with the sun shining and the sky not overcast at all.

SkyWatch Friday (my fourth) -- Edouard, the little storm that barely could, before and during

Out our front door (Montgomery, Texas), facing the north. Generally we don't see pretty red sunrises in the north, they are in the east-north-east in the summertime, east-south-east in the winter.

What caused this was that the sun was already up at 5:37. However the sky was so dark in the east with Tropical Storm Edouard that its red rays would only shine through the clouds way over here, and to the north of us!

You might call it The Day of Edouard. That storm pretty much fizzled before it even got here, inland about 80 miles from where it entered.

And this picture of the rain is from our balcony. It started about 10:00 AM and lasted until almost dark. The picture here was taken at 1:32 PM, after two and half hours of steady rain it still hadn't pooled on the golf course.

We were soooooo dry here that with a light rain like this it all soaked in for quite a while. Click here to see a Texas sized rain making puddles in our back yard golf course!

And no, we didn't lose electricity, and the wind barely blew.
