The Cake ~~ NaPoWriMo 2022, Day One

A Cake Lover Tells

My favorite
A cake with candles
Candles burning brightly
Quickly blow them out

Ones for me to blow
But first I make a wish
A wish I'll want to come true
Birthday spent with you

Will happen I know
'Cause you always do
You'll find I'm running away
So then you run with me

And bring my cake along

Winter vs. Spring

(Previously posted April 17, 2020)

The New Spring

Flowers bloom--freeze not
January grass is green
Winter never came

Daily walk with green
Baby rabbits run year 'round
Climate change is here

April's baby birds
BioRhythmic Lunar Clock
Keeps calendar time

Humans much confused
This one goes jalopy spin
Eagles on 8-track
Moon and stars doing just right
Mother Earth is out of whack

NaPoWriMo 2020 Day 24 - a "Finds Poem"

(I love to find old Zombie Trees along the road. [jimmiehov 2018])

Zombie Finds

I woke up this morning at four
I couldn't sleep no more
My dream woke me up, end of night
My passion, had to write

It was of a grove of Zombie trees
Alive no longer be
But inside those skeletons lie
Spirits call to the sky

Listen and be very quiet
Spirits not gone just yet
Waiting praise and prayer might be long
Basque in their heav'nly song

And when accepted by above
They crumble to that love

Day 18 of NaplPoWriMo 2020 -- a Tribute Poem for Jack Kerouac

[photo from
Fireblossom below]

( background material,  https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Kerouac )

The rich die old ------
Poor die by the curb
  whiskey bottle in hand

The rich die old ------
Poor die in distant land,
  ditches of war

The rich die in mansions ------
Poor die in East End
  slum apartment

The rich have fun in clubs ------
Poor write poetry and books
  Greenwich Village coffee houses

The rich have Fine Families ------
Poor like their "beat"*

Jack Kerouac was not rich, he lived and cherished the "beat", Jack Kerouac was a writer who died young ------
Age 47 ------
he was called in 69***

The rich are born with 'Silver Spoon' ------
Kerouac became famous when his book, "The Road" got notice.  Jack had lived and traveled between New York City and San Francisco until then, after he moved to Florida.

He called himself by his "own ------
statement of his name as
  Jean-Louis Lebris de Kerouac" ****

NOTES:
* "Beat" -- fellow novelist Herbert Huncke. Huncke used the term "beat" to describe a person with little money and few prospects
Also  his writing style was noted for his use of the long dash to separate lines of different or agreeing thought.  I tried using them here.

*** In 1969 I became single again.  I kept my Aerospace Engineer job at NASA and my studies evenings at the University of Houston.   My off times I lived a semi-Keroac single life. Mrs. Jim rescued me in 1973, we have stuck 47 years. (Writer's note)

Day 16 of NaplPoWriMo 2020 -- When You Get Old

They'll Clip Your Wings

When you are old they'll clip your wings
Take your license so you can't fly
Hide your car keys so you can't drive
Put you in a home keep you there

Do things you want and can afford
Fly  while you can soar with the best
Drive where you want still while you can
When they put you on the shelf, done

Then it's over can't fly no more
You'll contemplate what you can do
More so over what you have done
Your love life your kids where you've been

For on that shelf there is no more
Memories you'll savor can't plan more
They've taken your keys clipped your wings
Doors are shut at night on  your shelf

Maybe then you can write your poem

Well anyway, my 1950 Ford being hauled away.  I sold it.

Day 15 of NaplPoWriMo 2020 -- a Tribute Poem

Spencer's Folly;
a Tribute to
Diana Spencer,
Princess of Wales

Shrine built for daughter
  Now deceased
Apple family eye
  Still cherished
Estate garden is
  where she rests
On the island there
  in the lake

Died too soon, we came
   and we saw
Beautiful tribute
   Nations' love

Day 14 of NaplPoWriMo 2020 -- an Apology-not Poem

[Dad, Uncles, Grandpa, and Grandma]

A Non-apology;
  for things you’ve ...

Have you ever stolen something?
Doesn't take much thinking, does it?
Right away your conscience will tell

Was there a pack of cigarettes
When you were a bit young to buy
Stole them from your grandfathers car

I've thought about that now and then
Well I did that and glad I did
Now that he's dead and gone who cares

 - Day 13, http://www.napowrimo.net/day-thirteen-6/ at NaPoWriMo was the inspiration for this one, "Not apologizing" for some deed we'd done in the past.  But I didn't finish it in time for yesterday.

Day 12 of NaplPoWriMo 2020 - Easter Triolet

Easter Sunday

Easter Sunday is a joyous day
World-wide Christians are making their stands
Children's Easter baskets are displayed
Easter Sunday is a joyous day
Churches full people singing  their praise
Easter Bunny plays, kids in the sand
Easter Sunday is a joyous day
World-wide Christians are making their stands

NoteI didn't mean for this to offend, in the U.S. Easter is also a National Holiday as well as being a religious day.

Day 11 of NaplPoWriMo 2020 - Ode to a Weed

Ode to Wild Milkweed

Oh Milkweed plant prettiest weed that flowers
Whose blooms are the brightest orange of all
Your lineage is one of the hardiest
Great great grandparents hoed out of the corn
Your line has survived and gained prestige

You beckon the Monarchs from afar
On their treks from Old Mexico they stop
Your sweet smell pretty blooms they can't resist
While those butterflies stay their eggs are laid
You graciously host them and their cacoons

Then beautiful Caterpillars do roam
over your limbs over your body
Gracious again you give your leaves their food
While their mothers continue path to North
Die on their way praise your name in Heaven

Those worms turn to Monarchs like their Mothers
and take their places at the north
Oh compassionate weed of the wild
You'll have time once again more leaves to grow
And milkweed plant prettiest that flowers

Down - Day 3 of NaPoWriMo 2020

Down He Went

Most courageous of our Navy today
Beloved concerned  Admiral yesterday
That was yesterday with no job today

Code of military, "do what I say
then ask questions later" that is the code
Follow chain of command things move slowly

Meanwhile his troops were dying by dozens
Aboard that ship of death in his command
Superiors were slow, he needed action

To the top he went, over heads afraid
Afraid of loss of prestige their silence
Unafraid and brave he went to the top

Fired but proud of doing right for his flock
I'd vote for him president any day

Change of Plans -- Day 2 of NaPoWriMo 2020

Hemmed In

I am hemmed in here
while my Mustang Ford
is ready to whine
Lovely top-down days
are going to waste
Texas Bluebonnets
drool for company

That's because some dirt
farmer west of town
we're saving him from
dread COVID 19
Him we don't know and
for sure haven't seen

So gladly I stay
Here on my own street
But that's not all bad
My granddaughter came
with sidewalk chalk to
decorate my drive

NaPoWriMo 2018-01 -- Pick

Pick One

Today we have choices to make
National Poetry Month starts
It's one poem for the observance

It's a different matter one each
Each day some will write to observe
Now that's rather taxing for Moi

We shall see what tomorrow brings
Last three years I wrote every day
So for tomorrow do or don't

Pick one
