My Cow - a Haibun for Friday Writings

Imagine a Brown Swiss Milk Cow, brown in color, with the same features as my FFA, Future Farmers of America, project for my junior and senior Ag activity and class. We took her home from a calf auction when she was small, just a few months old.

That was for my sophomore year, I fed and cared for her, she was a pretty young heifer at summer break time. By graduation time next spring she was a good Milk Cow.  We separated her from her little calf the day it was born, and she joined our small Milk Herd.

All school FFA animals at our school must have been named.   I  named her Brownie.

Snowmoon Write -- for Haibun Monday

©iStockphoto.com/Wouter van Caspel

Snowmoon Last Night

Driving home last night we pulled over to view.  Just above the horizon was a magnificent scene, the moon, a February Full moon in bloom.  It was  showing its features as white with an orange tinted background.  It's name, being in February is the Snowmoon, heralding in falling snow, the kind the kids' snowmen are made of.

But being in Southeast Texas, close to the Gulf of Mexico shore, we won't be having snow this year.  The chances are gone for that come midmonth February.  Our temperatures are now in the 70, 80, and a few 90Fs from here on out.  Yes, we may have a cold wave come in from the north but still no snow for us.  That comes about once every ten years.

And anyway, we enjoy seeing this moon in full with no snow, it is sooo very pretty.  Maybe next year.

Where can we see snow you'd bring

New Moon not Blue - an Acrostic Write for dVerse Haibun Night

 Hey Diddle Diddle;
The Cat And The Fiddle

Hey, hey, in the sky, there loomed the moon.  The moon was bright that night, a New-moon for our delight.    Who doesn't love to look way up there, thousands of miles away, and see a sight like that.
Diddle and piddle, some plod their time away, never looking up into the sky.  They miss the beauty of our universe, especially the visible stars, planets, and our moon.  This New-moon for human consumption by the eye.
Diddle and diddling tonight, there was to be a special event.  Telescopes were out, binoculars too.  Awaiting an almost miracle event, hinted but not told what it was to be.  Could it be fake news, many speculate.

The children with their noses up in the air, scented a special event as well.  Their minds were running wild, how would we know?  Conjuring up answers to this question, some matching science's reports and others letting their minds run wild, they kept on.
Cat in the alley was up to something.  Had that to do with the speculations?  She meowed nonstop, looking up into the sky.  She wanted to be able to tell, for sure not miss the excitement.
And then the sky opened up, the clouds went away and all could see.  A gorgeous New-moon was hanging high in the sky.

The Ozark Boys and Girls were making music like never before.  Hill Billy music, to tunes all listening would know.  Folks were stomping their feet and clapping their hands.  Dancing was to begin.  Dancing in the halls and in the streets.
Fiddle de do, the Fiddler did play.  He played his heart out in tribute to the New-moon.  He cried some tears; the listeners were too.  Handkerchiefs if they had, otherwise on their sleeves the tears were wiped away.

Cats singing low now
Fiddlers loved their audience
Trees were clapping leaves

The Cow Jumped Over The Moon

The people were looking up as a never-seen-before event was happening.  The New-moon was smiling, looked ready to applaud.  The Fiddlers stopped for a moment before going wild with those strings.  Never in the Ozarks had the Ozark Boys and Girls seen such a sight.
Cow, Farmer Brown's was to be surmised, came flying around but seemed to be headed to the New-moon.  She was, she was!  Flying to the New-moon!  She's on her way!
Jumped one big jump then two, up to the New-moon.  Sat on his lap, licked his face.  New-moon just smiled as he ate it all up.  He'd never seen anyone doing that before, nothing like this.

Over, she's going over the people below were crying out, "Careful up there."  The cow didn't mind it seemed, perhaps she was ready to go home, home on the other side.  Then it happened, she finished her jumps.
The world was going wild, dishes were running away with the spoons; dogs were laughing all over the world and Humpty Dumpty looked as he might fall.  Who would put him back together if he fell?  The other cows even got into the corn, waving The Cow along.  She had jumped over the moon!!  One of their kind over the New-moon.
Moon soup was the soup of the day, flavored by a few cow hairs.  A Tribute to the Cow jumping over the New Moon.

Nature clapped to see
Such a sight never seen before
Trees closed their green eyes

My "Moon Jar" made by Mrs.
Garriott, astronaut Owen Garriott's
wife at her pottery shop.  I worked
with Owen some at NASA Houston.

Note:  The lid's knob is the Earth and the jar body is The Moon.  The jar is about eight inches high.

Friday Writings - an Allegorical Poem

"Don't judge a book by its cover"**

book with a face that tells a lie
must examine to its fullest
horse's mouth look him in the teeth

is it a book of fiction tales
book of fables, nursery rhymes
beauty lies in deceit and smiles

delights we like breaking the rules
those bad pennies come back to haunt
battle scared covers bled for naught?

listen to your heart, it's your call

         (and a Senryū)***

Book of the Dead

Truth behind the lie
The secret of me and you
Shakespeare for the squirrels

(My book runneth over)

Two hunters sitting
  in a duck blind:

 "M.R. Ducks."
 "M.R. Not Ducks."
 "O.S.A.R. C.M. Wangs?"
 "L.I.B! M.R. Ducks."

I fail to see any value whatsoever about the above conversation which has gone ballistic years ago and still lives. [a Joke or a Poem, google doesn't know either (URL)]

** My answer to Rosemary's request was "Don't judge a book by its cover" which saying is my writing's title.
*** The final Senryū I composed at our public library as a "Spine Poem" using the titles of four books found on their bindings spines.  I have not read any of them although I am thinking about checking the bottom book out to read.

A Tuesday Haibun Poem for the Tuesday Platfom

Art by Cassie Kerns ,
from The Imaginary Garden
 _ _ _
My Fifth Lifetime;
working at NASA, helping
with Apollo Lunar Missions

It was in my1,2,3,4,5,6,7, oops during the fifth lifetime when I was working at NASA, the Johnson Manned Space Center, Houston, Texas (Number One is High School, when I became a real person.

I was an Aerospace Engineer working for Ford Aerospace Division, or perhaps as a Philco Tech Rep Engineer which was purchased by Ford while I was working there, 1964 to 1979.  I was holding an Engineering slot as a college dropout with Experience in Lieu of a Degree.

Technically my job then was a Digital Telemetry and Data Processing Engineer.  This was the first to use a newly developed state of the art telemetry processor to identify and sort the various astronaut, spacecraft, rocket, and experiment parameters that were downloaded and now would be shown on the Flight Control console displays and meters.  Some were saved for later scientific study.

Our equipment was in two large rooms, each backup for the other in case of breakdown.  We had no breakdown that day of July 16, 1969 during Apollo 11 Lunar Landing, nor any during the entire mission.  We did have TV monitors to watch the proceedings as you may have seen at home plus numerous other activities which were not broadcast publicly.

Finally a couple of weeks later we were still processing data at splashdown time.  This called for cigars all around.  We would get ours by going through double doors which lead to the control room.  At that time most Aerospace Engineers and Technicians were men, but the women were getting their cigars as well.  I do not know of any of those with us who smoked theirs although I have known women who would smoke a cigar.

Afterwards, I left NASA December 31, 1969 soon after I finished my final graduation.  During the eleven years of college, mostly at night, along with working 50 to 60 hours a week around mission time.  I had three new degrees, an Associate Degree in Pre-engineering, a Bachelor of Science in Economics, and a Juris Doctorate of Law by that time.

My next job would be a full time Professor of Business Studies at San Jacinto College with three campuses in the Houston Area.  Had I stayed at NASA, I was a Senior Engineer by now, I would have been a Manipulator Arm Specialist in Flight Control Simulations Branch.

A Color Me Thursday Poem

Sherwin Williams

 The Bakery Shop;
 colorful business management**

Flirty Fuscia
Worked in her kitchen all day long
Kept the pastries warm, "freshly baked"
When it's time to go home, alone
Owners don't mingle with the help

Girl Rapture Blue
Waited tables all day long, ask?
What's a nice girl like you doing,
The answer's "here", clear. Mind the floors,
at night.  Make ends meet, second job

Ranunculus
and her dog,
Scarlet Maple
The lady, her dog, come at night
Customer delight, buys half price
No one knows for sure after there
They sleep all day and do at night
Their donut start
.
Heaven Sent

Rain at Night

Day 15~~ NaPoWriMo

A Snow Tale

Our semi annual travel to the Midwest was a little tougher that year be cause of snowy conditions.  Our travel party was husband and wife with youthful daughter and a middle age Beagle dog named Adi.

We three humans from the Gulf Coast area of Texas would visit Colorado in wintertime for skiing vacations.  Adi always stayed home then, being boarded with relatives.

But when we went to visit family north in the winter Adi would get to go, sometimes.  This time we ran into snow in Missouri, quite a little bit for us.  We drove and drove and finally stopped at a rest area for Nature's calls.
 _ _ _

Adi was first to go
She'd never seen snow before
Learnt of it rear end first
After that she loved the snow
Drifts really tickled her fanny
.

Adi wakes from her nap for a photo op.

 - Toni's instructions for us, "Write a Haibun of 44 - to 150 words of some event in your life - a love gone wrong, birth of a child, a daily walk, a day out of a vacation...anything will work! Remember: Haibun are based on a true experience in your life; it is NOT flash fiction." My word count is 138, title, prose, and Tanka.  The Tanka is loose on syllable count, 33 vs. the 5-7-5-7-7 purist's count.  And it IS a Tanka instead of the usual Haiku or Senryū.
 - The picture is of our younger daughter.  Adi did come to play in the snow but she was already at her boarding house before this picture was taken.  Herman, Nebraska is a little town about 35 miles north of Omaha.  I was born and raised in a farm house up in the hills west of Herman.

An Outing with Grandma

At seventeen and a new high school graduate I went to Oregon with my parents and little sister to visit my grandparents.  The second day Grandma took us kids to the beach.  She had gathered a couple of buckets and a spade. We were going clam digging. I had never been to an ocean beach nor seen a clam before.
Grandma spotted many clam holes and we dug into the sand but dig as we could we never found even one clam.

Never saw a clam
Grandma couldn't find me one
Now love fried clam rolls

NaPoWriMo 2018-14 -- Day 14, a Poem, dreams to be concerned

In his dreams there was one
One that the doctors called
a "recurring dream"

For our young man this was no small matter
He could not get it out of his mind-stuck
more than once a week the dream reoccurred

The dream

In a small café in Bernice he would go.  There to write poetry and drink coffee and eat chocolate éclairs.  But it bugged the snot out of him, the table wobbled.  Wobbled so badly that it was hard for him to write. He used to like that dream but reconsidered when the table was introduced.  It wobbled, one leg was shorter than the rest.  A book of matches or two under the short leg solved the problem.

That was the first problem, but in his dream he could never find that book of matches or two.  This presented a terrible situation for which there was not solution.  He never brought matches, he did not think about changing tables (this one looked over the park, giving him inspiration for his poems).   And to ask the inn keeper to fix it was out of the question.

Writing the Dream Book entry for "Wobble Table Dreams"

So bad for him was this dream that he went to see a psych.  The psych was of no avail, his dream books had never heard of a dream like this.  You're a poet and writer, why don't you write an entry for the "wobbly table" recurring dream.

His entry

The dream--one of the nastiest ever
Table wobbles
Can't be made to stop
Live with it

Meaning of the dream-Dreamt by
a very frustrated person
Doesn't trust the docs
more than one has told him to leave
the last one said to him
guess you're just going to have to
Live with it

See the waterlands ... a Thursday Poem

See the water lands;
save the water lands

We trudged to the pier, coffee in hand, trying to make sense of outlines peering through the fog. For certain there was a sun up above, trying to break through the clouds.

The noise of a propeller was competing with its driving motor. Have to put up with that.  And now we could see her.  Mama Cass reincarnation?  We immediately though of her as a Hippie we used to know, only younger.  Her sun bleached hair was to her chest, straggly as usual.  Sandals though, not barefoot as the old.  And where was her yellow dog who followed her everywhere?

We all climbed on and our Ms. Cass gave us a lecture of which I've forgotten every word.  Except I do remember she was holding a sack of marshmallows, there were three more up front by her controls.  She revved the engine and we took off, almost literally as this water craft was air propeller driven.  We were skimming across the water.

We went rather fast until we passed a herd of turtles.  There we slowed and our guide threw half a sack of marshmallows.  Those turtles clamored over to see the fuss, and then to eat.  I think they had been wailing for us; they must have had some sugar sweet teeth.

Off we went again, a left then a right another right and then left.  I didn't know how we would find our way back, for sure I'd tie a ribbon on the tree.  Finally the high spot of our swamp ride, we stopped and Mrs. Cass gave out a loud screech.  Then she smiled as she tossed our the marshmallows.  I think I counted seventeen alligators coming to call.

Our way back was uneventful, we must have made every turn correctly as soon we were back at the start.  It didn't seem long but by my watch we had been out for three sun burning hours.

Let's save the turtles
Let's save the alligators
Politicians won't

GUNS KILL ~~ a saterical poem

New Azalea Press, 2/16/2020:
It's been two years now.  Nearly every gun in the U.S. has to been insured in case it shoots and kills or injures someone.  If not insured, it was a goner.  Or an animal except for legalized hunting. GUNS DON'T KILL but ALL GUNS ARE MADE TO KILL.

Sport shooting, IF NOT MADE TO KILL wasn't a problem.  ALL GUNS FOR SPORT are now PELLET GUNS.

The insurance companies are loving this addition to their business, their profits are soaring.  And the states regulate insurance companies.  That way the former DO NOTHING CONGRESS is now out of the picture.  2nd Amendment too, guns are legal but must be insured.

An incredible number of lives have saved.  Deaths by guns last year were down by 83 percent, murders were down by 67 percent.  Family violence injuries and deaths are now down by 64 percent, deaths alone down by 92 percent.  The insurance companies have done wonders in their screening efforts to withhold insurance and turn over the guns of those mentally unfit for gun ownership.

An added benefit to 'czar mr wrecking ball', he has had his blind trust buy an insurance company.  While he's at it he can insure himself against all the "lying" aggressive "romance" starved women he might molest.

 - Personally, I own three guns which are near antiques.  One is a 1920's Montgomery Ward 22 gauge rifle, the other one that shoots bullets is a post WWII Spanish 9mm pistol for which the manufacturer has gone out of business.  The other is my childhood Red Ryder BB gun that still shoot.  I have never fired the first two nor have I purchased bullets for them.

Climbing the stairway to ... (a prose poem)

The Stairs to the left went up

The stairs to the left went up, to the right it seemed straight down, down as far as eye could see.

They reasoned. Let's you and I go up. Good things seldom come easy but this looks like the way more traveled.

Heading up, the handholds were plentiful.  A few little mice were underfoot but that bothered them not.

Walking most of the morning took its toll, the hikers were tiring.  A mile or so an hour was their best.

Their path narrowed. And it wasn't straight anymore. But the last turn for the morning had a surprise.

So beautiful, sumptuous reds and bright yellows prevailed. Greens and blues surrounded, streaming away from the golden streets.

There was a gate, it looked inviting. There was a hunk guarding that gate but he looked friendly to the touch.

Touching he did, on their foreheads with his hands and with his pole. The pole likened to a fishing pole, it had a hook, sharpened at its end.
Which hook quickly caught each by their collars then thrust bodies directly fronting the gate.

Your names please, they figured he already knew each of those. You're in my book he said. Nice reports written there.

You are passing the tests, just one more thing. Type your passwords on my screen, it's the one given you when you signed up with the righteous.

Fine, fine, all went well.  We are glad you chose our stairs. Welcome to Paradise.  Gabe here will show you your lodging and then show you around a bit.

Paradise for them
They didn't know they were due

Cell 23 is reserved ~~ a Poem for the #metoo effort

Cell 23
.
Cell 23 is reserved. Reserved for the men fulfilling their own uncontrolled beastly lusts.  These ladies, and millions more, who have been made their objects have had enough of being silent.

Not wanted and not liked, these antics towards the women have changed the lives of every one touched or spoken to. The actions and words are not forgettable and hardly ever forgiven.

We who have somehow been spared have a hard time emphasizing with them. That could be you or me but try a little harder. Can you remember when you were hurt in ways you won't ever discuss?

Have you been spoken to in harsh or demeaning ways you didn't deserve? Have you? Or perhaps if you try hard you can remember injustices done to you. Well, like you, these millions of women have memories that never will be erased.

(If you are a perpetrator, don't say you forgot.  Except for people lacking in mental capacity, perpetrators don't forget crass, hurting, immoral, and illegal acts to another person.  If you say you forgot YOU LIE.)

Worse ever so more for the victims because it affronts and insults their humanity.  Situations in life, perhaps from birth, which lend to their powerlessness to avoid . If you witness such an incident you can report it. And be a witness with testimony that can help.

And if you are a perpetrator STOP IT RIGHT NOW!

With the courage of so many in modern times, it is time for Cell 23's all over the land to be filled. Remember, you can help the effort in many ways, whether or not you have been an object.  There's an empty Cell 23 near you.

Women still hurting
Indelible scars remain
Let's make it better
Help fill your Cell 23
There is one near you, start now
