My write for the day, April 2, 2023:

      What is this?

What is a Song?
It's a tune waiting to be murdered
by a guy like me who cannot sing
    but he tries--utter flop

What is an Owl?
An owl is a funny bird who can't
    sleep at night, partly because
he has four dimensions of color
spectrum vision that keeps him awake

What is an Oyster?

Its a little sea monster who's afraid
to come out of its shell; it only
does that when it is dying and
ready to be cooked or eaten raw

What is the Fog?

It's a condition of the brain so
that the one who's in it acts silly
    goofy and cannot think straight

What is a Ghost?
It's a person who dresses in a white
sheet at Halloween time; he tries
to scare old ladies and little kids

and a bonus,

What is a Quahog?
    A Quahog is a word that I didn't
know the meaning of until I sicced
    my Search Engine on it
You can find it out also, just click here
               _ _ _

 - I am linked with NaPoWriMo, National Poem Writing Month, for writing of five to ten of the words listed below.  You can see the instructions and will be able to read others' writings there at

My word list was:
owl          generator      fog      river      clove      miracle      cyclops     oyster     mercurial     seaweed     gutter         artillery     salt      elusive      thunder      ghost      acorn      cheese      longing      cowbird     truffle     quahog         song

Note:
The dictionary pictured in this Spine Poem is 110 years old and had belonged to my father. We were in the process of moving and I was about to throw it away. I had been keeping it because I thought it was the one Dad 'corrected', by changing the pronunciation of Hostess to utilize a soft "O" that he had penned in. My mother would always be very upset at him and his, 'whatever' whenever he would bring this up.

Now come to find out after my saving this dictionary for several years after Dad died (2009 at age 97) that this it is not the one he had changed. Bummer, so I had thought that I would throw it out even if it was published in 1913, making it 110 years old. A 'Spine Poem" makes a poem using the words of spines of books. Here I used some liberty in using a similar sounding but different meaning of the middle book in my stack.  You can see more of my Spine Poems by clicking here

Notes:
    a.   A spine poem is a Senryū where each line is a title of a book, as
         written in it's spine
    b.  I estimated Rosemary's birth year as she graduated from college
         with a BA in 1962
    c.  I checked out "The house in the orchard" as it claims to be
"the finest in gothic fiction" and I need examples and more

Four Stanza Riddle Senyru Group -- NaPoWriMo Day 23 -- a Spine Poem

The Start of Something Good

Such a quiet place
A bridge across the ocean
The Perfect Stranger

What am I tonight
"Robe of Many Colors"
Totally out of sight

Who is this stranger
You have seen me many times
Again not tonight

I am the rainbow
Afternoons after the rains
Delight for the world

Friday Writings - Spine Poem plus

Rock, paper, tiger
Silver Anniversary
Humpty Dumpty was pushed
(my spine poem/senryu)

(I was overhearing their talk:)

I think it's just terrible
Dastardly deed--purposely
So cute poor fat little man
(student with white shirt)

Every way accessible
Sat on his wall reaching all
Long office hours he kept
(student with shoes that don't match)

Clever and very wise too
Physics 102 project
Broken eggs back together
(with white shirt)

Let us go back to the lab
Make Dr. Dumpty famous
(student with black shirt)

Then we'll teach him--Balancing
(in unison)

( Now I've heard it all!!)

 - I am linked with Magaly at Friday Writings #10,
 - Magaly invited us to "create poetry or prose inspired by a conversation we’ve overheard."
 - I left my position as an Aerospace Engineer at NASA Houston in 1980 for a second career as a Business Professor at San Jacinto College, a large two-year community college in the East Houston area.
 - After every class I would move to the front of my desk, move the lectern out of the way, and sit on the desk as my students passed by.  Some would stop to discuss a point we covered in the lesson, maybe give a real-life example that fit, or make an office visit appointment, and so on.
 - Various times in my life I have felt folks were placing me in an older order.  My classes were no exception, starting after teaching maybe fifteen years, many of the female students began patting my legs as they passed.
 - I was well liked by the students even though I made them work hard for a good grade.  Fine with other faculty too.  But I was forced to retire due to health reasons (from which I've recovered).
 - My working life had phases, three years working in an Elgin watch factory, five years in the U.S. Army, 19 years with Aerospace, and 22 years at San Jacinto College.   I retired in 2001, Mrs. Jim was ahead of me, she retired in 1999.

Friday Writings - an Allegorical Poem

"Don't judge a book by its cover"**

book with a face that tells a lie
must examine to its fullest
horse's mouth look him in the teeth

is it a book of fiction tales
book of fables, nursery rhymes
beauty lies in deceit and smiles

delights we like breaking the rules
those bad pennies come back to haunt
battle scared covers bled for naught?

listen to your heart, it's your call

         (and a Senryū)***

Book of the Dead

Truth behind the lie
The secret of me and you
Shakespeare for the squirrels

(My book runneth over)

Two hunters sitting
  in a duck blind:

 "M.R. Ducks."
 "M.R. Not Ducks."
 "O.S.A.R. C.M. Wangs?"
 "L.I.B! M.R. Ducks."

I fail to see any value whatsoever about the above conversation which has gone ballistic years ago and still lives. [a Joke or a Poem, google doesn't know either (URL)]

 - I am linked with Rosemary for the prompt described below on the Friday Writings website,   https://poetsandstorytellersunited.blogspot.com/search/label/Friday%20Writings
 - Rosemary has invited us to "reinterpret a well-known saying."  I picked this one from a googled list, "Don't judge a book by its cover.  You can visit her instructions by going to the link above, also you can visit others who have posted their writings and recorded them at the bottom of her post.
 - Notes:
** My answer to Rosemary's request was "Don't judge a book by its cover" which saying is my writing's title.
*** The final Senryū I composed at our public library as a "Spine Poem" using the titles of four books found on their bindings spines.  I have not read any of them although I am thinking about checking the bottom book out to read.

Duck that swears;
Models Woman in Red

The Long Road Home crawled that night
So slow the duck was Going Rogue
Streams of curses "F"words galore

Not her night for sure Self Matters
Tough as They Come number one comes first
Handle with Care, Woman in Red

Easy Money tempts, Seize the Night
Make it Last for all Angels Fall
Duck that swears like Woman in Red

 - I am linked with Margaret in the Imaginary Garden at http://withrealtoads.blogspot.com/2019/08/artistic-interpretations-with-margaret.html?m=1

Tecnically, these poems that we write are "Spine Poems" (click on the 'Label', Spine Poems, below to see several of the ones I "wrote".).  Margaret has, on that link, a picture of a woman in red in a library full of books. Margaret listed those books that she could see.  We were to use at least ten in our poem.
I used these ten:
  1. The Long Road Home
  2. Going Rogue
  3. Self Matters
  4. Tough as They Come
  5. Handle with Care
  6. Woman in Red
  7. Easy Money
  8. Seize the Night
  9. Make it Last
  10. Angels Fall
 - There also is a novel, one of a series, by Louise Penny similarly named "The Long Way Home" that I had confused  with the listed book, "The Long Road Home."
 - It was a good book but I was tired of running into the pet duck with a foul mouth.   It too quacked saying the real thing for the "F"word.   After a few times reading this I quit the series.

Day 13 ~~ NaPoWriMo

The Double Cross;
The witch; Bad when I want

I am dying most every one knows
I've a terrible pain in my side
Its migrated to my head and more

It isn't all bad because now I
can be bad when I want, terribly
I can be good when I can afford

I call it my wedding day murder
Mean guy he was dead before he died
Two days after that day I killed him

Placed the body in the piazza
Was a half hour before daylight
Almost dark as the lights had gone out

Our love had been hot real destructive
The husband's secret won't be revealed,
fake name another love perfect crime

- Magaly wanted us to "write a new poem that includes 3 book titles (each title must contain at least 3 words, and you must not rearrange or delete any of the words)."  I had used these book titles previously in 2014 with a little Senryū that is in the book picture above, http://jimmiehov6.blogspot.com/2014/02/a-book-title-poem.html#comment-form.  In my poem, the book titles are underlined.

Beneath a Scarlet Sky -- a Poem for Tuesday

Hell

She defied all
Did everything her own way
She defied God

Facing Fire

Beneath a scarlet sky
Whispering death
Miss you

Hell

 - I hadn't composed a spine (book) poem for quite some time.  When I got to the library to pick it, Beneath a scarlet sky, up for Mrs. Mrs. Jim the title beckoned me to find three others.  Picking was easy but the last book, Miss You asked to be included.  There went my Senryū, a Haiku to some.

A 'Play it Again poem' ~~ Street Poetry/Library Poetry

Hell Bent

Dead before dying
Slip of the knife, Devil's Peak
Down don't bother me
_ _ _

Photo and Poem Copyright © 2016 Jimmiehov, All Rights Reserved

Today I'm linked with Sherry at the Imaginary Garden with Real Toads, Play it Again, Toads.

 - Sherry wants us to choose  past prompt to write for again,  I choose Susie Clevenger's heart rendering prompt, Street Poetry.  She told of a young lady sitting on the streets she met in San Juan Puerto Rico who was selling poems that she would write while you waited.
 - Her challenge was posted as Poems In April ~ Taking It To The Streets in which I am now linking this poem.
 - I substituted 'Library' for Street' in writing mine, as I captured the lines for the lines of my Senryū form called a Spine Poem from the shelves of the Willis, Texas, public library.  Or was it the Katy, Ft. Bend Country Library, I can't remember?
 - Then I left the little stack I photographed sitting on the library shelf when I left. I doubt anyone else enjoyed my poem and I have been waiting to post it here.  Sherry gave me the chance to post it for you to read.  I do this quite often when I visit libraries, most are probably better quality than this one.

A Spine Poem again, Hornet's Nest -- Red Radish and the Beet, a Limerick

Hornet's Nest

The house of widows
The girl who kicked the hornet's nest
Furiously happy

- - - - -
. - I'm linked withMarian at The Tuesday Platform with the Real Toads in the Imaginary Garden.
. - I chose my books from our ship (the Caribbean Princess) library.  This ship doesn't have much of a library, one row of bookcases.  The room is shared with the computer and Internet Room. Not real friendly neighbors. http://jimmiehov.blogspot.com/search/label/2016%20Caribbean%20Cruise
. - I hope you don't mind too very much, this one is marginal, perhaps not qualifying for a Haiku or a Senryū.  Thanks for peeking at my other poems, I try to write 'poems' of a sort most of the time.

My entry to the current Limerick-Off Monday contest

Red Radish and the Beet

Said Red Radish to her friend Beet
“I’m Queen Vegie here” in her tweet
Corn said “real corny”
Trumpet vine, “horny”
Mary C picked them both, to eat
