Reconstructing my Totem Poem ~~ a Poem of my Heritage in a new and strange way
Lollipop Pole [link] .. . . .
Building a pole today;
a totem pole
Different than those you've seen
Starting with a base, Daddy, where?
Where did I come from, what country?
Isle of Man/England - Corkill clan
Corkills were from the Isle of Man
Country where the cats have no tails
Married a fine English lady
Germany/England - Hufendiek
Germany, Prussians, old Habsburgs
Came on a boat to New Orleans
Married English, Fletcher and Cram
So now you have it son partly
There are royalty rumors floating
Mayflower cousins Holland too

Those are basic foundation blocks
Your aunt has written much of this
Now let's build a pole family pets
Two dogs while I was growing
Von a German Shepherd and then
Von was our German Police dog
Two carvings up now your puppy
Border Collie name forgotten
When we moved she stayed El Paso
Next followed by a Lassie Dog
With a goat and rooster crowing
All met with unfortunate ends
Wife had Pebbles jealous of me
Growled if I got in bed's wrong side
Pebbles got so very old died
Came Toto runt of her litter
She crawled under her fence followed
Allowed to live with us new home

Inherited pets asked for not
Missy naughty dog unwanted
Gave son and DIL some fits
Daughter brought Adi Beagle Dog
And Amber her old tiger cat
They would stay until they both died
One more dog Katrin toy poodle
Her mother our friend had died
And willed prissy Katrin to us
Now our last, famous words "There'll be
no more." But then our granddaughter
Her tiny Betsy fish lives here
Well Dad, you're a teacher of such
There's a lesson here to be learned?
Family ties build the foundation
Family pets set our memory marks

That's a clearly and well shaped family totem, Jim. Names, faces. The final stanza nails it.
Pets set the memory marks ... so true and good idea for a totem.
What a rich and colourful history! I enjoyed this😊. I quite agree that family ties build a most formidable foundation... and the pets... don’t get me blubbering.... what wonderful memories!
No better totem than one formed of loving and lovable pets. I like the background you included.
