The B Man - a Poem for NaPoWriMo 2024 Day 19

   Boogie Man Commeth

The Boogie Man might be here
She looks under her bed
That Boogie Man haunts her
Whether or not he might be there

All started the day I told her
I meant no harm, just let her know
Know and thing about the man
Didn't say he wasn't real

And now, things have changed
The Boogie Man is there
That Boogie Man hunts her
Under her bed, waiting

All started the day I told her
I meant no harm, just let her know
He hides when she looks under bed
He chases her all around

Hunting her until both are tired
She never lets him catch him
The both go to sleep
I wonder, does he really want

My Sister -- a Poem for Her -- for a dVerse Prosetics and Friday Writings

    Little Sister,

When you are old, well pretty old
old enough to drive like a Senior
one who should be off the road,
I'll get you a dog like a lady I knew

I hear now that you don't drive far
and are staying off the major roads
like highways that run though town
And freeways too, those can kill you

Driving for me is still a challenge
challenge to lead the traffic, up front
you might try my secret, hide keys
car keys, where they won't be found

No disaster getting lost, the dog can help
Follow him, he can take you home

Note:  This isn't true, neither of us has reached this stage although we are both elderly. Many our age have.  Oh yes, there isn't a dog either.  You can read your fill about her on my other blog (click it).

Food and Eating -- A Write for Friday Writings

[JIM'S LITTLE BLOG: Happy Birthday Sis! Happy Birthday Lois! (jimmiehov.blogspot.com)]
A restaurant on the West Side of Montgomery, Texas, now closed (Lois is center, back)

About Food and Eating

Been asked to tell a tale
A tale of food or eating
Start with a place
that isn't good?

That I will not

We've never had a bad at the Cracker Barrels.  Their Meat Loaf is par with Mom's; Chicken Fried Chicken is my favorite.  Desert is Fried Apple in sweet syrup to go for desserts, at home we have it a la mode with Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla ice cream.

        Yummy!!

Then tell about your cook
I'll tell you of some things I cook
My cooking some might call
it for every thing I make

So everything I make, means
microwaving, baking, frying,
assembly of ingredients,
defrosting from the frozen,

You name it, that, I might “make”

Today I'm "making" Hot Dogs with cheese and sauerkraut and having Bush Original Baked Beans soon for Lunch. Cherry Pie a la mode next or later for dessert.

If there is a place left
on the Misses' card
we can go out for
a tasty meal

And when I'm not “making” it chances are that we are eating out. I like a lot of places besides Cracker Barrel. Some we visit that are nearby, Fast Food would be McDonald's, Wendy's, Burger King, Whataburger, Little Caesars(pizza), Chick-fil-A, and Kolache Factory. Favorites here would be Burger King for a sit-in Breakfast, Wendy's for sandwiches, and Subway and Kolache Factory for take-out.

If we are better dressed for going in, it would be Orleans, Spring Barbeque, Luby's, Willie's Grill, Carrabba's Italian, Chuck Wagon BBQ and Burgers, La Finca(Mexican), and Apple-bees.

Our Sunday Restaurant is Orleans, serving New Orleans type foods, much is spicier than Mrs. Jim wants. Wendy's eat-in is good, ours isn't open often for breakfast due to a help shortage. Burger King has Breakfast coupons; our favorite there is BOGO egg, cheese, and Ham or Sausage croissant sandwiches plus one senior coffee; it comes with one helping tater tots and one medium coffee.

I used a list, “Restaurants in Katy,” there were 972 (Houston Metro Area, 11,361) for choosing. Some others did not make the list. Also we eat outside Katy into Houston proper, there it is liable to be Papadeaux Seafood.

Luby's has veteran discounts, Orleans has Senior Day on Fridays.

Going Gothic? Gross at Least -- a Poem for dVerse Poetics Day and Friday Writings

   filipendulous

'twas most embarrassing
most I've ever been

hanging from a thin thread
a big glob of snot

a thin yellowish thread
slimy sticky stream

out from my nose dangling
holding glob from fall

onto my chest would fall
sneeze was bad enough

bad, embarrassing me
table of twenty

nineteen were watching me
left my hanky home

host handed a cloth
napkin shiny silk

loosened by dreadful sneeze
mine was on the floor

grateful and humbled big
fiancé's rescue

 - The first part of my poem reminds me of one time my sister coughed:

sister's memories vary, she remembers best how I taught her to avoid smoking cigarettes. By some illicit means known only to me I had acquired a pack. We went down to the creek and 'smoked.' I think Lois smoked two.

She claims they made her sick. I only remember
a lot of coughing and meaningless words from her. To this day I can't recall how I ever convinced her to 'smoke' the second.

My other favorite memory is teaching her to drive Dad's pickup. I taught a lot of girls and women to drive, maybe even ten. My kids count for two of them. Lois was always a bad driver. Once on the way home from school she ran over a neighbor's mailbox. Another time later in life she ran right into someone and totaled out a very nice Oldsmobile she and hubby, Jim. W, owned. April -- NaPoWriMo 2023 Day 19 -- a Poem of Scares, then and now

My sister sewing up Adi's (my Beagle dog) Teddy Bear
[click on the picture for a larger size]

        Scary Things

There's two scary things in my life
There's one for my little sister
one for me, both tamed, still around

Monster Boogie Man honored well
To this day Sis peeks 'neath her bed
Knowing he's not there peeks in case

She was about five, makes me ten
I told about that monster
Boogie Man hides 'neath children's beds

Seems all my life but not really
Still go to sleep with dim light on
Since I was young not liked the dark

Had my sister walk me at night
Outhouse in back of chicken house
Young, I was afraid of the dark

I'd bribe her, let her hold the light
Remains a small guilt 'cause I told

a Poem for Tuesday Platform -- Sweeping, Dustpans, Crumbs

Sweeping up the crumbs

Seems my life has forever been sweeping up the crumbs
Crumbs left from the night before, sometimes days before
Even stretching onto days and months, seasons and years
Crumbs left from the night before.  Those crumbs we have

Most are from nights of enjoyment, eating, living to fulfill
Fulfilling the dullness of our lives. Pleasurable moments
Then the price to pay is the broom handle of the mornings
Oft time much more cleaning than the broom can do

I'll take the broom in hand, and the dustpan I've waiting
Waiting on the wall just for the crumbs of the night before
Those crumbs are from my hand, once in while from my foot
But generally there has been a partner as part of the crime

One tale I'll tell, you can imagine others. Innocence can
be an excuse, often for my partners they were. When a teen
I'd found a package of 'smokes', lying where I've never told
Grabbed my sister by the hand, to the creek we hiked

Down by the creek we smoked, on the tree lined banks
You might can remember your first smoke, this was hers
It was big time for me, grownup like, mimicking their pleasure
For her it wasn't fun, she puked the bottom of her stomach

I don't know if that was when we returned to the house or it all
happened down at the creek. She tells her story seems each day
How she quit the habit after two cigarettes, Never smoked again
I've spent a lifetime sweeping early crumbs, naughty boys and girls

Those other episodes I've mentioned, some were life changing
Other crumbs from the night. A lot firsts for me as a young adult
Times only me, one or a few others, and God. Some I believe that
I'm the only one left alive to tell.  Some I'll never tell to anyone

Imagine what, likely they be.  Yours too, safe harbor in our heads
Mine keep my broom going, dust pan getting full. Empty it quickly

A few hours at the Burt County Museum, Tekamah, Nebraska

Left to right, my sister, Lois, curator, Bonnie, and Mrs. Jim

Dad was on the Board of Directors here, he also was the Treasurer for quite a spell.

I used to tease him and tell him that the reason he was asked to be on the board was because he met the qualifications 200%: Dad was retired (time) and he had a pickup truck (utility).

The perfect untouched snowy lawn for a nice kid game of 'Fox and Goose.'

Who has played that game?
