Weekly Scribblings -- The Hunt, Little but Old

[click on picture for large, click again for very large picture]

 Hunkered Down

I'm hunkered down not hidden very well

Like a little bunny rabbit, real still

You'll see me if you're looking really good

Little but actually I'm very old

My bones are brittle my joints are rusty

A terrible stew not good for cooking

Here with my friends violets and pansies

Shaking in fear--good catch I wouldn't make

Dust over blue terrible color too

Please walk on by I'm not the one for you

A Poem -- The Wolf

Wolf on (My) Wall

Guarded by the wolf on his wall
Safe from the bad his wolf would howl
From bright mornings through the dark nights
Brave wolf was there easing his frights

The wolf could scare away all bad
Growl, howl, even bite for his lad
Rain, snow and hot sun boy could call
Big Gray Wolf was there standing tall

He'd guarded the dad now the son
A hundred years old feared no gun
Loved by the town not to be downed
Painted for them artist renowned

This boy has grown, feeble and frail
Big Gray Wolf hangs above the rail

 - This morning I dug my old picture out for a photo-op.   It is waiting to be hung again, "above the rail."  I have embellished but the print is nearly a hundred years old.  My sister still thinks it is a scary picture. We are old but not real frail.

Country School Days

At the Corner

Today he was first there at the corner
Ready for school, he would wait for the girls
Soon they would be coming, most often they'd
be at the corner first waiting for him.

The three of them would exchange their greetings
and tell just a little bit of their life
Bits and pieces in place they would grow up
More than just buddy buddy they were chums

Nothing romantic, those thoughts never told
Teens a bit naïve to grownup's fun ways
didn't keep them from school kids' pillow talk
A little here and there monkey business

Puzzled by biological urges
All staying low, a mystery to them
Exploration away from the classroom
None of that this morning, school business waits

They were in different grades, still bosom friends
Older girl tenth grade, little sister eighth
Him the middle at nine, shared the class room
Teacher's a dunce they thought, she wore no bra

That's country school back then, the upper grades
One room for them, seven, eight, nine, and ten
Three kids in top three grades, two in seventh
Barn held six horses, these three and three more

Though no romance their crushes filled the air
His for two girls who rode with him plus one
The other two were laying bids for him
But he loved his horse more than those girls

After class the horses pulled at the reins
Fine oats were waiting, they tried to hurry
Teens were in no haste, made their horses plod
Plan for the morrow, part at the corner

Gold ~~ A Tuesday Platform little Poem

Gold?

No
All that glitters is not gold

This glittering little red truck
is more precious than gold to me

Should you get a little red truck
take you where e're you want to go

My glittering little red truck
will cost an arm and leg to you

'Cause my precious little red truck
worth to me more than all the gold

Keep your gold leave my truck alone

Open Link Monday -- Abou Ben Adhem

. . . [please click on the picture to make it a bit larger]
. . . . . . . . [ -- I am the boy in the back row]

By Leigh Hunt 1784–1859 Leigh Hunt

Abou Ben Adhem (may his tribe increase!)
Awoke one night from a deep dream of peace,
And saw, within the moonlight in his room,
Making it rich, and like a lily in bloom,
An angel writing in a book of gold:—
Exceeding peace had made Ben Adhem bold,
And to the presence in the room he said,
"What writest thou?"—The vision raised its head,
And with a look made of all sweet accord,
Answered, "The names of those who love the Lord."
"And is mine one?" said Abou. "Nay, not so,"
Replied the angel. Abou spoke more low,
But cheerly still; and said, "I pray thee, then,
Write me as one that loves his fellow men."

The angel wrote, and vanished. The next night
It came again with a great wakening light,
And showed the names whom love of God had blest,
And lo! Ben Adhem's name led all the rest

Poem copied from the Poetry Foundation, http://www.poetryfoundation.org/poem/173698

The picture above was my annual "school picture."  I believe that I was in the fifth grade, our school taught eight grades but some were empty.  I was five when I started.  My sister, Lois (link), is front row right, standing near the teacher.  She was four or five, depending on when the picture was taken, and had started in the first grade.

This was the second and longer poem that I had ever memorized. (My first poem memorized was "Trees" by Joyce Kilmer).
I had come to like this poem and somehow I applied it to my life.  It probably calmed for life some of my bad side bones and helped set my personality.

The poem was in an old poetry book that I found rummaging upstairs in an unused bookcase.  The bookcase had belonged to my father's aunt, Aunt Minnie. The book was either hers or my mom's from her younger days.
I still have that little book, a paperback, someplace packed away for now.

Here is some author material the bottom from the bottom of the page linked to above:

Skeletons

The telling of my skeletons

I love to tell of my skeletons, brash
Grotesque, once they roamed the prairies with pride
Instead today, they hang around my house

There is this other fellow
he's thriving in my closet

Today I am linked with at the Real Toads, Artistic Interpretations (link)

Margaret has an excellent of post showing skeletons on display by various artists.  Go see (link).  She also has asked us for our "artistic  interpretations."  This was mine, very simple, like I am.

The steer head skull I have here is one I rescued from my 'bachelor son', Tim.  He had is laying under a tree in his front yard (garden to U.K. people) .  I had always wanted one and now have this one on my request.  Thanks, Tim.  The red is two-fold, a University of Nebraska flag, but it also represents the matador's cape just in case he could have had a Skelton in his closet.

We have a family skeleton our closet.  It belonged to Mom, she died with all the details, keeping it well.  I would have loved to have known more, she was a bit ashamed of it (or more perhaps like did not want to boast).
There was this family, we believe with royalty, with a person in Mom's line who married out of favor and as a result was disowned.  There were two mysterious visitors who came, once when she was younger and still at home.  He was wearing a uniform, perhaps like a Prussian.  We don't know details of this visit.
Then after WWII someone came, Dad said he was offering money which she declined.  Reparation funds we all think.  Sounds of a Charles Dickens' tale.  I loved reading Bleak House (Link).

Hub Cap Reflections ... Looking At the Sky

I got this one because I liked the truck. I didn't have Sky Looking in mind then. So it doesn't show much sky. The vehicle is a 1950 Ford Pickup truck.

This one does show some sky. It is on my friend's 1951 Lincoln that was pulled along side me on a public street waiting for the light to change.

The picture on the left shows that we are really on the street. You can see my 1974 Green Mustang II Ghia in the hubcap, waiting beside it for the light to change.

The light did change. Now the '51 Lincoln is the fourth car up. I showed this one for you to see a SKY PICTURE. I didn't want to cheat too badly for this Sky Looking Day post.

An added goody, this road is closer than two miles away (south) of our home. We were on our way to another car club meeting at a member's home. He lives in our subdivision, less than a mile from me.

Getting there is half the fun ... Looking At the Sky

Our local Early Ford V-8 Club had an outing. We went to the Lienda Plantation after meeting at 10:00 in the morning to drive together from Magnolia, Texas.

These pictures show a little of the Texas scenery we encountered along the way. We were south of the hills we have around our home in Montgomery, everything was flat. There weren't even any freeways with those little overpass bumps.

A few of the cars were newer than our charter recognized. I was in my
1998 Ford Mustang GT Convertible (scroll down in picture), with the top down, there were a 1957 Ford T-Bird and a 1980's Mercedes belonging to members who did not drive their early fords.

Early Fords are from 1932 to 1953, the years that Ford had a flat head V-8 engine as an option.
