Contour Farming
Down hills rains eroding
Solve, County Agent comes
Nodding heads did agree
Surveyors measuring
Hills left with bright markers
Following them Dad plowed
Plowed more—Terraces made
Corn, Alfalfa between
Corn for feeding beef cows
With hay for winter meals
Erosion stopped, soil enriched

Jim, I've seen the fields looking like that before but never knew the reason for it. My guess is how the winds blow is interrupted by the shape of the fields?
The reason of contour farming is that hilly farms loose their top soil by rain waters runs down hills and carries soil, freshly loosened by farm equipment. That also takes with it precious nutrients. The fast moving, down hill, rainwaters also make ditches not wanted for farming.
Here it is caught by the terraces and what doesn't soak into the soil is slowly diverted into one spillway.

Thank you, Jim. I've learnt something new today - and I live in Norfolk, surrounded by farmland. But then, farms in the US are huge.
So much better to help nature with sustainable harvesting.
I learned about contour farming at an early age .. my grandfather explained it to me. Love how your used "contour" in this poem, Dr. Jim.
