One Single Impression: Cognizance

She was barely awake
no alarms set for today

Yet somehow
someplace
someone's alarm had stirred her deep

It sounded in her ear
in her head
The cat was still sleeping

she wished she had a dog
The dog would have barked
making her feel
much more safe

A shadow brushed the curtain
quickly she closed the window
Rather she tried
The window did not shut
her eyes were fixed
A gruesome sight for her to see

Run run scream run
Oh for a dog right now

The cat rolled over
barely hissed
What was the trouble
no one was there for such a scare

The clothes on the line
left there from yesterday
swaying in the breeze

Of these my lady was not aware
as she grabbed a broom
out the door she ran
still screaming
for all to hear

Now she remembered to look under her pillow
There was a gun
she cocked it
aimed

Wait, wait
something's not right
Where was the broom
why was she still in bed

Shoot to kill regardless
understand tomorrow

the cat ducked under the bed
the clothes fell off the line
the window slammed shut

Fuzzy brained barely cognizant of moonlight and fear she drifted into sleep once more

This poem reminds me of the old Peggy Lee song,
"Is that all there is?"

"We were so very much in love.
Then one day he went away and I thought I'd die, but I didn't,
and when I didn't I said to myself, "is that all there is to love?
"

I would not mess with this lady. Nor would I want to be in the same room with her at bed time!

Glad she settled down - nothing worse than bullet holes in the curtains. :) I loved this little piece!

Wow...full of suspense...:)

So that can be done in a poem...something like cliffhanger...?

Nice, really nice piece Jim!
