"Snow White and Rose Red" *
art by Kerry Darlington
The Bear Comes
Snuggled down not in their beds
Snow White, Rose Red and 'The Bear'
Soon they'd be sleeping, the three
Dreams would come, mostly pleasant
Hungry bear knocking at their door
Cold and snowy, shivering
So they fed him, warmed him up
Played by the fire and he stayed
Became a nightly affair
Widow mother, glad he came
Now a play friend for the girls
Unlocked door he'd leave by dawn
Years and years went by the same
Came "The Bear" every evening
Carry the girls up to bed
What more did they dream about
Will they cry when bear no more **

- - *The Bear: "... After this, every evening at the same time the bear came, lay by the fire, and allowed the children to play with him; so they became quite fond of their curious playmate, and the door was not ever bolted in the evening until he had appeared..." A lovely poetic fairy tale Jim with a bittersweet feel! Hope all is well with you and yours.
ReplyDeleteYou told the fairy tale in poem form! Bravo.
ReplyDeleteI love the poem and a peek at the story that inspired it, which somehow I have either missed or forgotten in my long life........
ReplyDeleteGood story--I could have kept reading. :)
ReplyDeleteA wonderful rendition of an intriguing fairy tale.
ReplyDeleteWho knew that the brothers Grimm would write anything so, well, suggestive.
ReplyDeleteWell, I learned there is an old German fairy tale called "Snow White and Rose Red", a song of the same title, and a shorter version titled "The Ungrateful Dwarf" of all things! You've broadened my fund of knowledge with your fairy tale, Jim! Thanks
ReplyDeleteSuch a tender bear..I know they'll cry when he's not there any more.
ReplyDeleteWonderful fairytale poem, Jim. Who would not cry at the loss of Bear.
