New Start

. . .

     Another Start

The divorce was enough to make me cry

Thirteen years been married so cried I did

Three long years cried at night, pillow was wet

Those three years nights alone, hermit's life

In that time only three, three dates I had

Not real dates, girls I knew, cheery outings

Football game, movie new,  just things to do

Back to school, new degree, took up my nights

Then one night, for singles, Landlady's feast

A school night, couldn't come.  Then lo that night,

Teach dismissed, early leave.  Would there be food

Saved plate for me, my friend and his two friends.

One friend I knew, she was on off again

The other girl I'd never seen before

The two ladies jumped to when I showed up

"We've been saving a plate for you their chant

I sat beside the strange girl, ate my food

We all danced a little and got to know

Later goodbyes were said each our own way

Tick tock, tiick tock, time was running hum drum

Then one night before night class my phone rang

Was the strange girl I'd sat beside eating

"I m cooking Cajun Friday night come eat"

That's my bowling night . . . Well I'll get a sub

Leaving made a date for another eat

But I chickened out, lost my trust for girls

That was August.  In December things changed

"Don’t be afraid to start over. This time

you’re not starting from scratch, you’re starting from

experience," a lady told me that

I mulled over what she said, should I try?

What the heck, nice girl needs a nice guy

February, our month to tie the knot

She was the strange girl no more, not with me

Now we've been together fifty-two years

I'm glad she knew a good thing when she saw one – and that, despite a little understandable caution at first, so did you!

A lovely poem setting out the chronicle of your fresh start with the happy end. Congratulations on the 52 year marriage, Jim. I went down that path in my poem too - relationships have a way of ending and to start over seems so daunting!

How lovely! I am most taken with the fact you skipped bowling. That sacrifice made the difference to her, I think. I became a widow after 29 years of marriage, and never have found anyone else. I keep hoping! It gets lonelier as you get older.

I've certainly been familiar with those times of tears and looking back (with wisdom found on the way) makes one realise many different things (different for everyone).

I am so happy you found that "strange girl" and you cancelled the bowling and for all the years you have shared. You are deserving of every happiness! [ PS my first hip replacement 2004 and second replacement in 2008 were due to osteoarthritis, which was pretty young to be so incapacitated. They are both still working just fine! ]
