A Mother-in-law Poem for Tuesday Platform

Sitting in the doctor's office
Today Mother-in-law's in tow
She doesn't want to be here but
It's semi annual appointment

Her bag is full of bottles, pills
That's her medicine list for?  Me
Me to fill in the blanks for her
She thinks the nurses could do that

So we sit, taking in the crowd
Too many people here she says
We'll never get out of this place
I don't need to do this, let's leave

Explaining why we are here now
Seems we just came last month, let's go
Mother, you cannot, doctor's call
He needs to check your heart again

Check your fluids and check your lungs
Oh look, new law. We go in first
Yes, I'm taking my pills, and walk
To the corner everyday, mail

Doctor, she's not taking them all
I don't take the potassium
Every day, eat a banana
You need twenty of them each day

That's how it went, pulled every step
See you in six months, TAKE YOUR PILLS

When I now start to go to the doctor i fear I will nag a bit too... but hopefully I will not have to do it yet. The eye is mending fine.

I prefer getting nutrition from food rather than pills as well.

I still miss Mother. Too many things I never got to ask her. She taught us very well.

Read your poem, Jim, brought memories of my dad's last 14 years of his life, and the various trips to see medical specialist, across southern Ontario, with my mom. Especially, the last decade of his life, when they lived, in a rural village, and had drive for hours, to London, Ontario, to the University of Western Ontario and the teaching hospital near there. The one thing, I have learned is, Kiwis have more potassium then bananas do. Just need to shave them, before eating. The fruit with its own fruit coat. :)

I always drag my feet when going to the doctor, but I go with pills and questions.
