My Lemon Tree
.
My lemon tree has had a hard time
Hard time in life you will agree
Potted in same pot was in the store
Regularly watered not, survived
Bees don't come here anymore. Got to
pollinate somehow. An aside here,
I taught a friend how to pollinate
Hers had almost dozen oranges
This year for the tree and me bees came
Three lemons, that's enough for a pie?
Maybe not but there won't be a pie
Lemons were forgotten in the fridge
Bees' work in vain, promises gone wrong
Lemons wait and rot, no thanks they got
Next year will the bees come? Think not
They're dying by the millions, why plant
Government doesn't care, politics
Cut taxes for rich, let the bees die
A machine can't a lemon tree make
Tree, dumb mute, can't tell you how it is

There Grace wrote of David Huerta, his poems and other literary work he has done. Then she challenged us to write an original poem for this Sunday's post based on his poetry or something inspired from reading his poetry.
Since I can't visualize (hardly) I decided on his poem, Fruit, which prompted me to pay a little tribute to my Lemon Tree and also a dirge (or ding) to our political scene. My senator says 'why should the U.S spend money on determining why the bees are dying and on how to save them?' I would say that the Honey Business doesn't have a very powerful lobby.
David also wrote a poem called Machinery (click here, and scroll down or click on Machinery in the index). That poem prompted me to write in my poem the line chiding the machine, which can not make a lemon tree. As if it could, would there be lemons?
The stupidity of senators is really stunning, the pollination is so much more important than the honey though.. So the absence of fruit is a hard thing to swallow. But is still think the lemon-tree need to be watered to survive.
ReplyDeletePut that tree in a bigger pot, Jim and water it. I do hope the bees come back. What a short-sighted senator. We have too many!!
ReplyDeleteThe bees and magic of pollination are very important to the trees and harvest ~ That is very short sighted for the politicians ~ I like your sarcasm of the bees dying and those machines that can't make a lemon ~
ReplyDeleteThanks for the notes and being inspired by Huerta's poems ~ Have a good week Jim ~
"Bees' work in vain, promises gone wrong." I enjoyed your poem Jim. I especially liked the line that I quoted - it is so poignant. And so true about "life." Thank you for visiting.
ReplyDeleteHa. You are very right here. I think the bees seem to be doing a little better again, but not well enough. In your case, though Jim, I hate to say it, but you should use the lemons that you get! AT least make lemonade! It is a charming poem though! Take care, k.
ReplyDeleteThose are three beautiful lemons! It's sad to think of a garden that is no longer visited by bees.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Kerry, I'm so very jealous of your lemons. May the bees come back.
ReplyDeleteSo very true! I watched a video on the news about bees declining in population, and they are one of the busiest workers of nature that we have. They pollinate our plants for free, what more could a gardener ask for? I don't like the buggers stabbing me with their needle point stingers, but I sure appreciate the work that they put out each year.
ReplyDeleteHave a good Tuesday
ReplyDeletemuch love...
Oh boy, you nailed it all in one poem about a sad lemon tree, Jim. I so agree. I hope the tree will produce next year and that the bees come.
ReplyDeleteA social comment that deserves a rallying cry. The bee thing has me angry. Watched that documentary on bees and how now they have to hand pollinate the asian pear crops. Its sad. Great piece with a great message.
ReplyDeletePoliticians are hand fed by deep pockets of greed. A tragic bee story that should never have occurred. Thanks for raising your voice.
ReplyDeleteJim, thank you for your understanding comment on my poem about Pup. Yes, I hear you about Adi. Sometimes we are lucky to have that once in a lifetime dog, and they were it for us. I have Jasmine and she is a sweet girl, but there is not that connection I had with Pup. I suspect healing would come in the form of a little black puppy but am in flux about my housing right now and need to resolve that first. Sorry to have been slack in making the rounds of late, Jim.......I have been under the weather. Feeling better now. Looking forward to getting filled in on your doings two weeks from now.
ReplyDeleteSure enough, a machine can't make a lemon tree. Why isn't the plight of the bees a central issue, a focus? Whacked.
ReplyDeleteLovely write. Poor little lemon tree and three is not enough for a pie. All pollinators are in trouble, GMOs and RoundUp mostly to blame, but where there is money to be made all else fades.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
And one more thing, your senator is in the majority: old money, old brains, old ways. Spend money on the war machine. That's what we do.
ReplyDeleteThe three lemons look so bright, Dr Jim :)
