Lonely days make me sad.
More so on the rainy days.
I remember once we journeyed to Missouri.
It rained most of the day and seemed like perpetual night.
Our old Chevy was leaking rain.
Leaking right over where we children sat.
Back seat of course. We were sitting in the back.
When we got to Joplin my mother broke the news.
We were expecting something sad from her.
She seemed to cry all the time; ever since two days ago.
Two days ago when she got the call.
She wouldn't talk about it but we kids all knew.
We knew there was nothing good
coming along those telephone lines.
She mumbled something almost obscene,
something about the operator listening in.
Mother broke the news.
She had her kerchief,
wet and wadded,
next to her nose.
But we all knew it was her eyes that made the wet.
Wet of her tears. Do tears really stain?
We had always heard about the tear stained.
Tear stained cheeks and the like.
For sure stained her kerchief was.
The news that mother broke was solemnly heard;
distraught, the young ones listened, silently sobbing.
Grandma had died.
Our grandma. Grandmother to a tribe it seemed.
We had always had Grandma. Now she was gone.
We cried.
We were alone. I was alone.
Alone in the car with the others.
Alone in the rain.
Alone in the wet of the leaking Chevy.
And the rain wouldn't stop.
Why did it have to be?
I was alone.
All alone.
Very sad.
Alone.

Yes, that's really sad news for anyone if a loved one passed away!
ReplyDeleteThey say tears stain...maybe it does, the memory of the sadness, that is the stain!
When my father died in a vehicular accident, i could not contain my tears, i was so sad, so alone, he left us all when we were yet to start a life of our own, thus he didn't enjoy my kids, it is lonely really!
I could feel the sadness here Jim!
Well, that's life, we all will meet our time! Cheer up!
I loved the idea of 'alone with the others'. It's very easy to feel alone while surrounded by people.
ReplyDelete...And that feeling remains ....to come up now and then....
ReplyDeleteJim, so well put in words.

Truly excellent at setting a lonely tone. It's amazing how our mind files away memories and can bring back the feelings years later.
ReplyDeleteYour poem brought tears to my eyes...as told from the eyes of an innocent child. Heart wrenching, yet told in such a beautifully poignant way.
ReplyDeletePoignantly beautiful!

Yes, that is very very sad when a person know that the loved someone passed away...And the feeling of "alone with the others." so true...I have that lonely feeling...The most lonely feeling is you try to get along with a group of people whom actually you don't like them at all. LOL.

ReplyDeleteYou have told this in a way so that this memory comes alive. Everyone seems to be alone with their grief, your mother, the rain, the miles, most of all, the child that was you.
Sad and beautiful.
Being from the Joplin area, I can picture those roads. Sorry it is a sad memory.
ReplyDeleteWhat a vivid and emotional tale. The loss of someone important to us leaves quite an impression. The rain also seemed to set the mood. Thank you for sharing your story.
ReplyDeleteThe deep feeling of loss, fills our beings with loneliness, though we may be in the company of others.
ReplyDeleteForever a feeling planted in our memories. Nicely written.
