Water and Stuff ~~ a Poem for Weekly Scribblings # 38

Clouds, Stuff, and Us

Here we sit
Under Joe Btsplk's clouds *
Spilling rain
As it goes round and round
On a leash
It's mother tightly holds
Hurricane
Storm Beta is her name

Some will flood
We think it not be us
Abandoned
Cars by the roadside sit
Sixty-nine
The year was bad for us
Thirty-three
Inch water in our house

"All just stuff"
That's what the wet are told
Not quite true
Memory jogs ruined
Time it takes
"Just stuff" to get regained
Joe Btsplk *
Please move your clouds along

Reminders**
We will miss them ever

   * Joe Btsplk was an unlucky man in the Lil' Abner comic strip who constantly bore a raining cloud over his head.  {Google images here)
** When our house flooded with Tropical Storm Claudette in 1979 our most treasured ruined stuff was the most of our photographs from over the years.   We lost more, all of our furniture, three cars, and a motorcycle.  The house but not the furniture were insured.
Mrs. Jim, Adi Beagle Dog, and our daughter, age five, and I left by a high window in one of the bedrooms.   Also we have moved from that house and it flooded twice more for new owners.  They had been advised.  It might be flooded again today, 9-22-2020.

  1. It’s been raining heavily here this morning, Jim, and I love the image of spilling rain going round and round on a leash! I hope you are not plagued by any more floods.

  2. It sounds as though your weather is more reliable that ours in Australia not that we are moaning at the moment but it never seems to be what we want when we need it so a bit more rain would help before the Sun takes over seeing we are upsidedown here.

  3. Some rain is OK. Too much rain can be disastrous. Unfortunately, we don;t get to pick and choose our weather!

  4. Thanks for the Joe B footnote. I saw the name, knew I knew it from somewhere but couldn't place it. Nice write, Jim. Despite ruination and discard, nothing's ever really left behind, eh?

  5. Those of us who have not been through the devastating loss of having our homes flooded can only begin to imagine the trauma, Jim. Thank you for sharing. Stay safe and dry!!

  6. That's heartbreaking that you lost so many mementos during Claudette. I hope Beta will be more gentle.

  7. In the end, so many things are "just stuff", indeed.

  8. We had a bad flood here two summers ago. My home is too high to be at risk, but various friends went through some very scary experiences and lost a lot. But oh, I enjoyed being taken back to Li'l Abner!

  9. I cannot imagine the horror of losing precious belongings ... fire, flood, hurricane, tornado, earthquake ..... a sobering poem. Go away Beta.

  10. Some of the most precious things are those that foster memories - such as photographs, quilts, etc - temporary things but we do hope they last us through our lifetime. Sorry for your losses. But what was truly important was safe.
