A Write for the Pantry

Out of the Ordinary

An unusual sight for Edinburgh folk
Streets wet and slippery icey and snowy
Cold wet winds blowing weather report "snow"
Bonnets jackets scarfs and gloves rubber boots

Houston, Texas, carry your gun holstered
Waking up this morning they found surprise
Before their eyes dead man there on the floor
Wondered who he was and why he was shot

Killing activists in old Mexico
Environmental activists stand tall
Pay the price bucking government's interests
Near fifty murdered in past two years *

Water leak in Houston Thursday evening
About half of Houston lost their water
Thirty-five years old was this water link
Schools and business closed just for one day

* Note: (excerpts from the current 'Searra Club Magazine' news publication citing the murders of two environmental activists already this year)

"... reports highlight the collusion between business and government agencies in carrying out the violence against environmentalists and ensuring impunity for the perpetrators."

"Mexico has become incredibly dangerous for environmental defenders -- according to various reports, close to 50 environmental activists were murdered in the past 2 years."

  1. Sounds like standards are slipping albeit at some official's advantage no doubt. Much the same as government grants here are paid out to to rich cities instead of to intended towns whose need is greater.

  7. So representative of the news snippets of doom and despair that comprise our daily news. Do you sometimes wonder how our days would go if we were instead offered snippets of good news to dwell upon?

  8. Very informative (much more so than some "news" sources) and I like Björn's suggestion. Maybe this could be a feature, Jim? Cheers!
