At the Corner
Today he was first there at the corner
Ready for school, he would wait for the girls
Soon they would be coming, most often they'd
be at the corner first waiting for him.
The three of them would exchange their greetings
and tell just a little bit of their life
Bits and pieces in place they would grow up
More than just buddy buddy they were chums
Nothing romantic, those thoughts never told
Teens a bit naïve to grownup's fun ways
didn't keep them from school kids' pillow talk
A little here and there monkey business
Puzzled by biological urges
All staying low, a mystery to them
Exploration away from the classroom
None of that this morning, school business waits
They were in different grades, still bosom friends
Older girl tenth grade, little sister eighth
Him the middle at nine, shared the class room
Teacher's a dunce they thought, she wore no bra
That's country school back then, the upper grades
One room for them, seven, eight, nine, and ten
Three kids in top three grades, two in seventh
Barn held six horses, these three and three more
Though no romance their crushes filled the air
His for two girls who rode with him plus one
The other two were laying bids for him
But he loved his horse more than those girls
After class the horses pulled at the reins
Fine oats were waiting, they tried to hurry
Teens were in no haste, made their horses plod
Plan for the morrow, part at the corner

It sounds like an innocent and lovely time, Jim.
ReplyDeleteAh, the joys of youth and innocence!
ReplyDeleteYou saw a whole plot unfolding within the scene - that is the best thing about art. It is like a window on a whole new world.
ReplyDeleteYou created a vivid work of art and history I can relate to.
ReplyDeleteThis took me back Jim; especially to walk to and from school meeting up with others but mainly with girls on the way home; or in my case with one girl especially with whom I walked to the station talking about everything under the sun and occasionally grabbing a kiss as she got on the train.
ReplyDeleteGreat memories, Jim!
ReplyDeletethis is so sweet... that confusion before the hormones set in...
ReplyDeleteI love the innocent feeling in this.. a time when a crush's smile carried enough weight to carry a spirit for days
ReplyDelete..he loved his horse more than the girls... ha! Love that.
ReplyDeleteSuch a childhood feel to this. Naturally the horse would be more loved.
