Father and son
Father and son duality
It starts with birth and lasts till death
Father son not seeing alike
Not exactly my story here
Older man alone sat in church
'Twas Father's Day preacher ranted
Man had forgotten now sorry
he came to hear preacher's guilt trip
Telling how fathering be done
How so many had missed their mark
So much was missed in molding sons
How the sons now like the fathers
Should he leave? clearly not for him
Shrunken he sat couldn't get up
Preacher said Grandfathers have an-
other chance Teach the children well
other chance Teach the children well
Spanned from manners to work ethics
From respect for the other sex
To making budgets paying bills
Loving neighbors and feeding poor
Feeling better he'll see them more
Maybe their parents, his own kids
Will have some rub off onto them
Shake the preacher's hand turn new leaf

It is the same for grandmothers. By now we understand better what kids need.
ReplyDeleteFathering is something layered deeply in the church, and the pastor's work of reminding is at work here. Great interplay of the internal and external corrective of fathering.
ReplyDeleteThere is a reason for grandparents... maybe it's easier to deal with it outside the parenting... i see myself as an uncle more since I don't have children
ReplyDeleteI've always said - any jackass can make a baby, but not everyone makes a good parent. But then, equally applied to either gender - mothers, fathers, any type of family dynamics - etc. or generally, relationships - we all have our quirks and quarks - it's whether we can find our ways, to self - and compassion - and sometimes, well - it happens or doesn't. And it just is what it is.
