The Mood - a Challenge Poem
Black Was the Mood
Black was the mood back in '33
Stock market had crashed, Jimmy was born
Share cropper's son, potato's good year
Doctor's bill was paid, Jimmy's then 'free'
Dad had his Ford, Jimmy had grandma
Jimmy rode the package shelf, "ooga"
Mama did washing, Dad washed his Ford
Grandma died, Jimmy crashed

ReplyDeleteOh the ups and downs.. and what that car meant, and as long as you wanted black all was fine.
ReplyDeleteHard times indeed back in '33.
ReplyDeleteI love the car as metaphor for the black mood driving through life's twists and turns.
ReplyDeleteWell that a tragic lot in so few words. Excellent!
ReplyDeleteThis poem relays a whole lot in just a handful of lines...nice way to delve into the past.
ReplyDeleteI can close my eyes and spend hours experiencing the generational story you've written into this poem. Brilliant, Jimmy...
