Little squirrel, I hope you'll come down
Down from your tree so we can play
We'll play some more but no more chase
Game of chase, you ran up that tree
A new game for us, follow me
We run and run and when we're done
I take you gently by your neck
Game of shake, a dog's show of love

Kerry's Challenge: "reimagine an iconic literary character or monologue as presented from the point of view of a close animal companion (or one that just happens to be passing by). Alternately, you may like to write a poem about yourself from your pet's perspective. Have fun with this idea - the only stipulation is that the narrative voice of the poem be non-human."
Katrin is our 14-year-old Toy Poodle. She was eight when the picture was taken and the dog/squirrel game of "chase" ended with the squirrel up the tree. Katrin was new then to us, she was given to us, when the former owner died we were her choice. (more Katrin posts HERE)
Adi, my beagle dog (she died a couple of years ago) shows us how dogs play the game of "shake": (more Adi posts HERE)

My iconic literary character? It might be one of Edgar Allen Poe's "victims",
i.e., "The Pit and the Pendulum".
Ouch! Luckily the squirrels are up to the challenge - that shake instinct is a killer!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing, Jim.
I LOVE the video of Adi - such a happy girl. And so kind to adopt an eight year old when her owner died, Jim. I enjoyed this post so much!
ReplyDeleteI think that squirrels are very unsuited to be playmates of dogs... :-)
ReplyDeleteAfter spending most of last week dog and cat sitting, I can promise you squirrels are not safe around either of them!!
ReplyDelete"Game of shake!" Only in "love" though...so funny. Nice capture, Jim!
ReplyDeleteKatrin is very cute, Dr & Mrs Jim :)
ReplyDeleteJim, now I want to see the (happy-mildly-psychotic) face of the dog while it invites the squirrel to play the "game of shake," lol!
ReplyDelete…I think his adoration goes unreturned :)
ReplyDeletea very dangerous game for the poor squirell
ReplyDeleteI'm still wondering if the squirrel RSVP...
ReplyDeleteLOL! I had a doxie who literally learned to climb a couple trees on our property as he chased squirrels. This brought back happy memories of sweet Buddy!
ReplyDeleteI take you gently by your neck

They are known to sustain the shake on toys. They do not stop until perhaps a hand comes off. A round ball is a safer bet! Great lines Dr Jim!
Hank
Cute dog but stay away squirrel! Great dog speak though, Jim. K.
