The Oscars Last Night

I Watched the Oscars Last Night

I watched the Oscars last night, I don't know
why. There was just one of the picture shows
that I'd seen. That was the Secret Life of
Walter Mitty. Count typewriters above,

not real fun but I liked their style. Manual
and old. I don't think you saw them at all.
I watched the Oscars last night, I don't know
why. Mrs. went to sleep, hurt her elbow.

Watched for McConaughey and Bullock be-
cause they had Texas ties, cow country, see.
I watched the Oscars last night, not at first.
Missed the start, my dog was about to burst.

Great Gadsby was a movie I saw last
fall--on the plane, going to London fast.
I watched the Oscars last night but I missed
Fitzgerald's pride. I liked it too, his best.

I watched the Oscars last night, they went so
slow, Ellen DeGeneres hurt the flow.
She passed out pizza and tried to collect.
I changed the channel and said, "what the heck."

  1. The Academy Awards ceremony used to be such a collective moment, but it's become much more like this, an idle curiosity about a bunch of films no one has seen. I mean, how many of us go to the movies all the time like we used to? This could be a cry-in-your-pizza country-western song. Nice work!

  5. Me, too--watched the Oscars,I mean. Your poem made me laugh aloud. I have had those years. This time, I had seen all of the films but 2 so I enjoyed the night. I liked Ellen's attempts to lower the elite vibe and liked that she didn't take much stage time for her own shtick. McConaughey--who won best actor--was really the only major disappointment. His talk didn't deal with the role he played so fabulously at all.

  6. I enjoyed your poem, Jim. I watched a bit of them - loved that the girl who played in Precious was one of the presenting actresses. Likely Ellen's influence to cut through the "elitism" as well. The girl who won for 12 Years a Slave made a very moving speech. Oscars arent usually my thing, but peeked in as I really like Ellen.

  7. I didn't watch them, Jim... was at a University of Arizona basketball game. (They clinched the PAC 12 championship, by the way!)
I saw as much as I needed in my news feed this morning. I may never watch another awards show again!

  9. Yep, my thoughts on the Oscars, as well. Read this today. With the Academy Awards on tonight, it is good time to recognize the accomplishments of Breckenridge,Texas, native Dean Smith. After growing up in Breckenridge, he played football and ran track for the University of Texas and won a gold medal in the 400 meter relay at the 1952 Olympics. He then spent many years working as a Hollywood stuntman. The below picture of him and John Wayne on the set of The Alamo is from a book that he co-wrote, “Cowboy Stuntman: From Olympic Gold to the Silver Screen.” He lives in Breckenridge on the ranch where he was raised and said in a recent interview, "It's not the biggest ranch in Texas, but it's a piece of dirt that I'm sure proud of. And when I die I'll never be able to get all this dirt in that casket with me."
