The Notebook
Black and small, one made to fit a pocket
Always with him, his second memory
One day I peeked surreptitiously there
Into his little black precious notebook
Found there numbers friends for whom he might call
Addresses of those he some day would write
Books of love and mystery for to read
Web pages for leisure computer time
The very last page was most surprising
Were directions to his home just in case
Just in case he was lost and didn't know
Helping hands could send him on his way home

ReplyDeleteThis is very touching and a poignant reminder of the passing of time and old age!! The last verse brought tears to my eyes as I had known two friends in the neighbourhood who were afflicted with Alzheimer's disease.

ReplyDeleteLiked this one a lot and it reminds me of a laminated card my friends gave me when I was much younger... To carry in my wallet and show the cab driver if I was too drunk to remember where I lived when I left the club... *blushing* Well done!

ReplyDeleteIt is sort of sad that we all will be reduced to this. Hopefully later than sooner.
ReplyDeleteI love your poem Jim...I read this piece as a notebook on life. One can fill his notebook of life with many things. I think the last line might represent the end of his journey. I just think it's very sweet!!
