One Single Impression: Allow -- An Acrostic

Not allowed:

Allow is a word I don't like.
Leave this be you need my permit.
Left hand lane for passing only .
Oral or print, mostly spoken;
Words of no I have come to hate.

Allow is a word of control.
Let me tell you one time, you can't ...
Like you have a brain, then use it.
Oral, spewed from demeaning mouth,
Words, wanting cruel authority.

I can't allow that.

  1. Hey, I went to OSI and didn't see the new prompt... you must have an inside track! Or I am sadly blind, lol.

What an intriguing mix of words you've created with "Allow." I had to look up what acrostic meant... aren't you clever?

Thanks for this very interesting take on the prompt. I've read it a few times now, and seem to get something new from it each time...

  3. You are right Jim, I do read OSI, even when I don't participate. Especially you and a few others who I have so much respect and love for ... as you all are so down to earth and I particularly enjoy your comments on everyone's poetry --- there is not one time that I can recall that you have not hit me dead on ... in your understanding of what I try and impart .. or share.

As for the word "allow", it's like a paradox, there are times when its use gets no respect from me, others time I think it is quite useful, based on how it is used, and as long as it is used with respect.

For instance, Oh yes, I saw the pictures of the precious one .. and, yes dear Jim, allow me to give you my belated congratulations and good wishes --- you have a beautiful family dear friend.

  9. Powerful words, Jim. I struggled with this prompt -- you're right "allow" is such a negative word reeking of power. Like the little twist at the end.

thanks for all you comments and enthusiasm for the mural!

  11. Power and control and the abuse by people who wield these things are the dark sides of allow. I like the image you chose!

  12. A great pleasure it is, as usual, to read your wonderful work... Wise words there, that send a strong message.. specially the contradiction between a mundane allowance, as opposed to the merits of free, thoughtful, conscious and well deliberated act!

  13. As a child we are taught many things we are allowed to do and other things we are not allowed to do.

As mature adults, I do believe we have a right to make more judgements of our own .. and at times, do our best to erase some of our childhood teachings.

  17. What a poem! I love it. I never thought of "allow" as control but you are totally right. This gives me new things to think about as I read the others.

  22. So creative here Jim! I agree about the passing lane .... but I have one questions...

did you put the toilet seat down?

  23. Q.P, this was the first comment that mentioned the toilet.
It is in a Colorado State on the banks of the Arkansas River. Just below is a river rafting launch business.

The lid? The bottom one is built down, the top one goes up or down.
The picture was taken in a men's rest room, I suppose they could just have well never put a lid there. :-)
