Thinking, one
thinking all the time
I've been thinking to myself
'bout something special
[cat is being awfully smug
since he ate the canary]

Thinking, two
I've been thinking of times we had;
places we went, nice life we lived,
and joys we shared. Thinking about you.
Been thinking of the home we made;
the house we found, children we have,
and the love we had. Thinking about us.
I've been thinking now that you've gone;
what did I do, where have you been?
I'm alone. Thinking about you and me.

Thinking, three
I've been thinking a lot of thoughts;
stay here alone, eat by myself;
could you come back? Been thinking about it?
- - - - - -
Thinking, four
I've been thinking a lot of thoughts.
So dearly we loved each other.
Oh would that you had not died.

I'm wondering who you are writing about Jim. I've scrolled down the first page of your blog, not clear who this is written about. So sad to read...hope it's just thoughts you had, not something that actually happened.
ReplyDeleteGeraldine, Heavens no, especially the last is not a part of my life story (except for my Mom, MIL, and a few more than casual, i.e. good, some very good, friends).
ReplyDeleteGuys, please do remember that I am always experimenting with my 'poems.' Remember when I put my disclaimer at the bottom? My removing those lines didn't mean that I had graduated.
..
The poem touches one in profound ways.. Heartfelt and tragic, it laments on the times that were.. Death is irrevocable.. It always leaves us woefully underprepared to face it.. be it of our own or of somebody we love.. We can merely sit back to reflect upon the loss.. and take comfort from the good times that had been...
ReplyDeleteAh.. reassuring to see it doesnt concern you..
ReplyDeleteOh, I almost forgot to thank you for this wonderful prompt!! Quite a challenge to the OSI poets, I daresay.. will be interesting to see what people come up with this one!
Hey Jim, thanks for stopping by. I didn't get "death" but "separation" from this. Granted one can feel an awful lot like the other to those left behind, but when the speaker is asking questions like "what did I do" I get that (one single) impression.
ReplyDeleteTo respond to your comment, mine could actually be about any of several people and I really hope you're (and by extension, I'm) right. But that's where the "Thinking" (or perhaps "over-thinking") comes in.
Couldn't pass up a prompt like this one. Not with the number of times I've gotten myself in trouble for "thinking too much". It was a natural.
Layers of sensitive sadnesses here being peeled away and open to the glare of light! Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the prompt this week!
ReplyDeleteI also dealt withb the Great Thinker( Great minds think alike).
I enjoyed all your poems.
Deep thoughts in these, ending with a beautifully poignant touch.
ReplyDeleteAn incredible sequence. You created loneliness through words and made it palpable. These poems make me realize being alone is not my thing.
ReplyDeleteSo sad (except the first one, ifone is not a canary).
ReplyDeleteThis is so heartfelt, and has such a yearning to it...I could feel the loneliness of this person as they lived on without their loved one. Beautifully done!
ReplyDeleteI'm touched by this poignant poetry. Wonderfully expressed!
ReplyDeletethey'll very provoking, I found myself feeling a bit down after reading the last one
ReplyDeleteJim,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading about all your thinking and I sure hope the cat doen not get indigestion from eating the canary...
I love the way you are able to put yourself into the mind of another, you are a great writer of fiction, even if it is in the form of poetry!
ReplyDeleteI know a loss of someone special gets my brain turning in so many circles that I long for it to just shut up. thank you for the great prompt. I had fun with it.
ReplyDeletevery nice to read that...!
ReplyDeleteNice work - loved the prompt... your words are always a joy to read...
ReplyDeleteHow utterly beautiful, these train of thoughts --- wraps one whole life into a wonderful web of what was verses what is verses what could have been, and the thoughts that bridge them are amazing Jim! This is indeed a profound and thought provoking web of communication you have created here!
ReplyDeleteNo way I would have missed this prompt --- even if my hand had frozen in place, I would have found a way to post something on a prompt that governs my entire life "thinking" -- I believe without thought nothing was or could be created, as has been proven by everything I know as life, ... "in the beginning was the word ..."
You did yourself proud, Jim. Thank you for such a wonderful inspiring prompt that made me feel good, not just sharing it, but first experiencing it so that I may share it.
Yes, I am feeling so much better these days, thank goodness!
i find 'em all sweet and softlike
ReplyDeleteI liked all. Those convey different thoughts to me.
ReplyDeletethat thin line

and the "thinking, two" was my favorite! it was beautiful!
Wonderful contemplation of the intricate layers of lives joined and separated. I’m glad to hear you haven’t personally experienced a tragic loss such as this and am impressed by your empathic abilities. The sense of loneliness is palpable.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the prompt. It has inspired some beautiful work.
Jim~ those are sad!!! But they are GOOD!!- You especially captured such poignant feelings in the second one. Thanks for inspiring with this prompt! Also thank you for the kind words on my post- I really appreciate it. It is a family issue so it is bound to not be pretty~
