Petals on the Floor

Petals on the floor

Everywhere you looked

One was picked up not

a petal at all

'Twas papers were dropped

At the courthouse were

Papers place of rest

Like petals fallen

Fallen from their tree

Never used again

Petals making mulch

Papers mice nests

. . .

  2. A kinder finality, perhaps, than it might have been.

  3. Few of us would wish papers [bills] falling like petals .. too many to pick up .. to pay.

  4. I read this a bit differently. Guess because of all the news these days. I immediately thought of all the lawyers’ papers, the applications for asylum or a green card - all the documentation, letters, papers an immigrant brings as they dutifully appear for their immigration appointment - only to have them spilled to the floor as ICE accosts them and takes them away. Those papers - petals they think will bloom into a continuation of living and working here, their dreams in those petals/papers, trampled.
