Theft Story -- a Poem for Friday Writings and dVerse Quadrille

  Three Silver Dollars

I wish that I could have

My silver dollars back

Never guess where they are

You don't know, I don't know

Wasn't there when they came

Small bath window, slivers

TV, stereo, junk

Violated my soul

Miss my silver dollars

Surprisingly the most

Excruciatingly

Note:  This true, I blame a couple who were selling door to door the night before.  And the first thing that comes to mind when I think of the burglary is my Silver Dollars.  Three I remember, two from Mom's coin stash, i.e., collection, and one given to me--I was an early teen then--by my Uncle Don who had just been to Reno for his first time.

  1. Oh this is sad, Jim. How people can do this and sleep soundly at night... I will never understand.

  2. Oh Jim, that’s awful! I’m so sorry that your home was broken into. However, the prompt word is SLIVER. I’ll let you off this time. :)

  3. Very sad! Too bad those slivers of glass in the broken bathroom window did not cut them and leave some DNA! Well done.

  4. I'm so sorry you had that happen. Such a violation, as well as the loss. Now you'll have to work in sliver. 😉

  5. So very sorry that you had to go through that, they take more than things, they take memories.

  6. It really hurts your heart sometimes when you lose things. I am sorry you experienced this.

  7. Burglary can be a true violation... yes I have been through that.

  8. I've been robbed before. I forget the things taken but not the feelings of such a personal assault.

  9. Devastating to be robbed … a violation, indeed! When things go missing sometimes I do find them when I'm not looking. But it sounds you've lost hope your silver pieces will be found. Sadly, there's thieves in our midst!

  10. Good poem sir, but what a painful experience.

  11. Hey Jim, this hits the nail on the head very powerfully. It's the personal items that matter the most, despite the overall value...

  13. Never nice to be robbed of anything. Commiserations...

  14. Oh no. I am so sorry about the silver dollars. When we got burgled it was a silver necklace my mum got me, that I never wore...but it meant a lot. Thing is it would have meant so little to anyone else. I send you all my heartfelt best wishes.

  15. The were rats indeed! Those lost dollars had sentimental value too.

  16. Losing mementoes . . . always sad. And sad to think your house was 'cased' beforehand.

  17. "Violated my soul" I think that's what resonates the most, the sense of being so disrespected and the violence of the broken glass. Shattering to what we hold dear.

  18. Oh, NOT nice! It's the sentimental value which makes it all the more hurtful.

  19. Blankin', bleepin' scags. (That's about as ugly as aunts' words are allowed to get...) Don't they know it's like the special pillows or toys little kids have, or the dare-you-to-break-us dustcatchers old ladies have? Three worn silver dollars--they could have just asked for the money. It's not about the money; it's about the memories your brain linked to the coins. They have no idea.

Can you link those memories to something else?
